Why okra has to come down to one plant
Okra is a tall, single stemmed plant that carries its pods at every leaf node up a main stem. Two plants sharing a station do not each make half a crop; they make tall, thin, weakly rooted stems that blow over in the first summer storm and set pods slowly because neither has enough light at the base.
The competition also happens underground. Okra sends a taproot down hard and fast in its first month, and two taproots in the same hole means both stay shallow. That is why an unthinned station is the first place to wilt in a dry spell at the height of summer and the first to lodge in wind.
Thin in two passes, not one
Doing it in two stages protects you against losing a station to cutworms or slugs the night after you thin. The first pass removes obvious weaklings while there is still a spare; the second pass, once the plants are clearly established, takes it to the single keeper.
- First pass, at the first true leaf The seed leaves are open and one small true leaf has appeared, roughly 10 to 14 days after emergence. Take each station down to two plants. Remove anything with a bent or purple stem, damaged seed leaves, or that emerged more than three days after the others.
- Second pass, at three to four true leaves The plants are around 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) tall, usually two weeks after the first pass. Take each station down to one. Do this before the plants touch each other, because after that the roots have already interlocked and removing one disturbs the other.
- Firm and water afterwards Press the soil gently back around the base of the plant you kept and water it in at the base. Thinning always loosens the soil around the remaining root a little, and a plant left in loose dry soil sulks for a week.
If you leave thinning until the plants are 8 in (20 cm) tall or more, you have lost the benefit. By then the stems have already stretched competing for light, and a stretched okra stem stays weak for the rest of the season.
Choose by the stem, not by the height
The instinct is to keep the tallest seedling. That is the wrong one. In a crowded station the tallest is usually the one that has stretched hardest for light, with a thin stem and long gaps between leaves, and it will be the one that snaps or leans later.
Keep the plant that looks squat and thick. Short internodes on okra mean the pod bearing nodes will be close together, which directly means more pods per foot of stem over the season.

Cut them off, do not pull them out
Pulling a seedling out of a station lifts the soil and tears the roots of the plant you meant to keep, and with a crop that depends on an undisturbed taproot that is a real cost. Use scissors or a thumbnail and cut the unwanted seedlings off at ground level instead.
The cut stumps die back and rot away in a few days and do no harm. Leave them where they fall on the soil surface unless there is disease on them, in which case take them off the bed.
When two plants per station is the right choice
There is one deliberate exception. If you are growing on a short season and want a lower, earlier crop rather than a tall plant that peaks late, leaving two plants per station gives you two shorter stems that stay within easy reach and start cropping at a similar time.
That only works if you widen the stations to 24 in (60 cm) and accept a lower total yield. Do not fall into it by accident by simply skipping the second thinning pass at normal spacing, which gives you all of the crowding and none of the benefit.
Container growing is always one plant per pot, whatever the pot size. A large tub with two okra plants produces less than the same tub with one, because the pods form where the light no longer reaches.
Record what you thinned to
Note the date of each thinning pass, the height of the plants at the second pass, and how many stations ended up empty. Over two seasons those three numbers tell you whether your sowing rate is right, and most gardeners find they have been sowing more seed than they need.
It is also worth marking any station where you kept a plant you were unsure about. When that plant turns out to be the first to lean or the last to flower, the note is what stops you making the same choice next year.
