Where the pests hide on this plant
An oncidium's fans of leaves overlap tightly at the base and wrap the pseudobulbs in dry papery sheaths, and that is where nearly every pest lives. Looking at the top surfaces of the leaves tells you almost nothing until an infestation is large. Check the underside of the leaves, the crease where leaf meets bulb, and inside and beneath the sheaths, using a hand lens once a month.
Scale insects are the commonest problem. They look like small brown or tan limpets on the leaf undersides and bulbs, or as flat white flecks, and they do not move. Mealybugs are the same family in cotton-wool clothing, tucked into leaf axils and among the roots. Both feed on sap, leaving sticky honeydew that goes on to grow black sooty mold, so a shine on the leaves is often the first thing you notice.
Spider mites arrive in hot dry rooms and in winter next to heating vents. They give the upper leaf surface a fine silvery or bronzed stippling and leave delicate webbing at the leaf junctions. Thrips scar buds and flowers, showing as silvery streaks and deformed blooms. Fungus gnats in the mix are a symptom rather than a cause: they mean the pot is staying too wet.

Dealing with scale and mealybug properly
Both survive a single treatment because eggs and crawlers are protected under the adults' shells and deep in the sheaths. The routine that works is physical removal first, then repeated treatment on a fixed interval. Isolate the plant from the rest of the collection the day you find them.
Wipe the adults off with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol, or scrape them with a fingernail, going over every leaf underside, every bulb and the inside of every sheath. Peel the dry sheaths off the bulbs entirely; they serve no purpose on an established plant and they are the main hiding place. Then spray the whole plant with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap until it runs off, including the mix surface.
Repeat the spray every five to seven days for at least four rounds. Missing the third or fourth application is why infestations come back a month later looking untouched. Do not spray in direct sun or above about 85F (29C), because oil on a hot leaf scorches, and keep oil off open flowers, which it marks.
If a plant is heavily infested and the roots are also full of mealybug, unpot it, wash the roots clean, discard all the old mix, treat the bare plant, and repot into fresh bark in a clean pot. Treating the leaves alone while the roots stay infested never clears it.
Rot, and what it looks like on an oncidium
Rot is the disease that actually kills these plants, and it comes from water that will not leave: a mix broken down into airless mush, a pot standing in a full saucer, or water sitting overnight in the crowded leaf bases after misting. Bacterial soft rot shows as a fast-spreading soft, water-soaked patch, often brown-black with a yellow halo, and it can take a growth out in a couple of days. It frequently smells sour.
Act immediately and cut wide. Take the affected leaf or growth off well into clean tissue with sterilized snips, dust the cut with cinnamon, and move the plant somewhere with strong air movement and keep it drier than usual. Stop misting entirely. Rot on the leaves that reaches down into a pseudobulb usually costs you that bulb, so cut before it gets there rather than after.
Black rot at the base, where the whole growth goes black from the bottom up, is normally the end of that growth and often of the plant if the rhizome is soft. Salvage what you can: cut back to firm white rhizome tissue, keep the healthiest three-bulb piece, wash it, and repot it into fresh bark in a small clean pot. Black spots on the leaves that stay small, dry and hard-edged are cosmetic and need nothing.
Damage that is not a pest at all
Blackened leaf tips creeping slowly down the leaf are the classic oncidium reaction to salts and fluoride in tap water and to fertilizer build-up in the bark. Switch to rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water, flush the pot with plain water every fourth or fifth watering, and cut the feed strength. Trim the dead tissue to a tidy shape if you like; it does not regrow.
Pleated, accordion-like new leaves mean the plant ran short of water while that leaf was expanding, almost always because the roots were failing rather than because the watering can was late. The pleats are permanent in that leaf. Deal with the roots and judge success by the next leaf, not this one. Dry papery cream or tan patches with hard edges are sunburn from a sudden increase in light.
Yellowing of the oldest, lowest leaves on the oldest bulbs, one at a time, is normal ageing and needs nothing. Widespread yellowing across several growths at once is not, and points at the roots. Keep a short note of when each problem appeared and what you changed, because the same problem in the same month next year is usually the same cause, and the note saves you diagnosing it twice.
