Pick the site for winter, not for summer
Almost everyone chooses an orange site in the growing season, when the whole garden looks warm and the tree looks easy to please. The site that matters is the one you have on the coldest still night of the year. Cold air runs downhill and pools against walls, fences and hedges, and a tree standing in that pool sits several degrees colder than one twenty feet away on a slight rise. That difference is the difference between a scorched canopy and an untouched one.
Beyond frost, an orange wants full sun for at least eight hours, shelter from the prevailing wind, and drainage above everything else. Citrus roots are shallow, wide and intolerant of standing water; a tree in ground that stays saturated for two days after heavy rain will decline slowly for years before it dies, and you will spend that whole time treating the yellow leaves as a feeding problem. Dig a hole a foot (30 cm) deep, fill it with water, let it drain, and fill it again. If the second filling has not gone within four hours, plant on a raised mound or choose elsewhere.
Give it room. A tree on a vigorous rootstock wants sixteen to twenty feet (5-6 m) of clear space; on a dwarfing rootstock, eight to twelve feet (2.5-3.5 m). Measure to the wall, the path and the drain as well as to the next tree. Roots run out well past the edge of the canopy, and the surface feeding roots that matter most sit in the top foot (30 cm) of soil, exactly where paving and trenching destroy them.

The graft union must stay well clear of the soil
Every orange tree you buy is two plants. The top is the fruiting variety and the bottom few inches are a rootstock chosen for vigor, soil tolerance and disease resistance. The join between them is the graft union, and you can see it as a change of angle or bark texture somewhere in the lowest six to twelve inches (15-30 cm) of the trunk. It is the single most important landmark on the tree.
That union has to sit clear of the soil and stay clear of it for the life of the tree. Bury it, or let mulch or a settling bed creep up over it, and the fruiting wood above the join puts out its own roots into the soil. The moment it does, the rootstock is bypassed and every advantage you paid for is gone: the tree loses its disease resistance and its size control, and it becomes vulnerable to exactly the soil-borne rots the rootstock was there to resist. This is a slow failure that shows up years later as unexplained decline.
So plant high. Set the rootball so its surface sits one to two inches (3-5 cm) proud of the surrounding ground, and expect the bed to settle a little more. Keep mulch pulled back into a clear ring four to six inches (10-15 cm) wide around the trunk. Once a year, in early spring, scrape the soil back and look at the union with your own eyes rather than assuming it is where you left it.
- Dig wide and shallow Make the hole two to three times the width of the rootball and no deeper than the rootball itself. Digging deeper only guarantees the tree sinks. Rough up the sides of the hole so roots are not turned back by a smooth glazed wall.
- Do not enrich the backfill Refill with the soil you dug out, unamended. Compost-rich backfill in a hole of poor soil creates a sump that holds water and discourages roots from leaving the hole. Save the compost for the surface, where it belongs.
- Tease the outer roots free If the rootball is dense and circling, slice the outer inch (2-3 cm) in three or four places from top to bottom and pull the ends outward. Roots left circling will keep circling and eventually strangle the trunk.
- Set it high and check the union Lay a cane across the hole to sight the level. The rootball surface goes one to two inches (3-5 cm) above grade, and the graft union should end up at least four inches (10 cm) above the finished soil surface.
- Water in, then build a basin Firm the backfill by watering rather than by treading. Build a low ring of soil at the edge of the rootball to hold water over the roots, and mulch the ring but not the trunk.
The first year is about roots, not fruit
A newly planted orange has a rootball still shaped like its pot and it cannot yet draw on the surrounding soil. For the first summer, water the rootball itself rather than the whole bed: two to four gallons (8-15 liters) delivered slowly into the basin, every three or four days in warm weather, tapering as the tree pushes new growth. New flush is the signal that roots have moved out into the native soil.
Hold off feeding until you see that first flush. Fertilizer applied to a root system that is not yet working simply salts the soil around a struggling tree. Once new leaves are hardening, start a light nitrogen feed and keep it light through the first season.
Strip the flowers and any small fruit in the first year, and most of them in the second. It feels wasteful and it is the best return you will get. A young tree that carries a crop puts that energy into fruit instead of framework, and it stays small and weakly structured for years afterwards. Two seasons of restraint buys a decade of better crops.
Never stake an orange tree rigidly unless the site is genuinely exposed. A trunk that is allowed to flex thickens and stiffens on its own. Where a stake is needed, use a low one with a soft tie and remove it after one full year.
What to write down on planting day
Write down the exact position of the tree, measured from two fixed things such as a corner of the house and a fence post, and note the rootstock if the label gives it. Ten years on, when you are deciding how hard to prune or whether a second tree will fit, the rootstock is the fact that answers both questions and the label will be long gone.
Record the planting date, the height of the graft union above the soil, and the result of your drainage test. The graft height in particular is a baseline: when you check it in a few years and it reads two inches lower, you know the bed has settled and you need to pull soil back rather than wondering whether you misremembered.
