Do not feed it
Orlaya evolved on thin, stony, alkaline ground and it performs best on something close to that. Feed it and you get exactly the wrong plant: tall soft stems that cannot hold an umbel, big soft leaves that shade each other and hold moisture, aphids drawn to the sappy growth, and fewer flowers per plant than on a starved one. Nitrogen is the specific culprit; a general purpose feed, a mulch of fresh manure or a bed enriched for vegetables last season will all do it.
The only soil work worth doing is drainage. If your ground is heavy and stays wet in winter, work in coarse grit or fine gravel before you sow, or grow orlaya on a slight ridge. Winter wet, not winter cold, is what kills autumn-sown rosettes. A pH on the alkaline side suits it; if your soil is very acid, a light dressing of garden lime the season before sowing is worth more than any fertilizer.
In pots, use a soil-based compost cut with about a third by volume of grit, in a container at least 10 inches (25 cm) deep so the taproot has somewhere to go. Do not add slow-release fertilizer. Pot-grown plants stay smaller than open-ground ones no matter what you do, so use a deep pot and expect a good plant rather than a large one.

Water deeply, rarely, and never over the heads
The taproot means an established orlaya finds its own water at depth, and shallow daily watering does more harm than good by keeping the root system near the surface. Water thoroughly enough to wet the top 6 inches (15 cm), then leave it until the plant asks again. In open ground on decent soil an autumn-sown plant may need no water at all until flowering.
The signal to water is the foliage going slightly dull and gray in the morning, not in the afternoon. Every plant with a fine leaf looks limp at midday in summer heat; that is a normal response to evaporation and not a request. If the leaves are still flat and dull an hour after sunrise, water and water properly.
Water at the base, never over the umbels. The flower heads are flat and slightly cupped and they hold water like a saucer, which browns the tiny florets and invites rot in the developing seed. Overhead watering is also the main way powdery mildew gets started on the lower leaves in a still, humid spell.

Support goes in early or it is useless
A well grown orlaya on lean soil often stands on its own, but a wet windy spell during flowering will still splay a big autumn-sown plant open from the middle. Once that has happened the stems set a permanent kink and no amount of tying will make them straight again, which matters because a kinked stem is no use as a cut flower. Support therefore has to be in place before the plant needs it.
The neat solution is horizontal netting, because orlaya grows up through it and hides it completely. It also keeps individual stems separated, which improves airflow and makes cutting easier.
- Set the net before growth restarts Stretch a wide-mesh net, around 5 by 5 inch (12 by 12 cm) squares, horizontally over the patch at about 8 inches (20 cm) above the soil, on canes at the corners, while the plants are still flat winter rosettes.
- Raise it once as the stems climb When the stems have grown through and reached roughly 15 inches (38 cm), slide the net up the canes to around 15 inches (38 cm). One raise is usually enough; two gives you a very tidy stand for cutting.
- For a few plants, use brushwood instead Push twiggy prunings 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) long into the ground around each plant in early spring. The stems lean on the twigs and the twigs vanish under the foliage within a month.
Do not tie orlaya to a single cane. It is a branched plant, and bundling the stems together traps damp in the middle of the plant, which is where mildew and rot begin.
Weeding, spacing and the end of the plant
Weed by hand near the plants rather than hoeing. A hoe run close to an orlaya cuts the top of the taproot, and a plant damaged that way wilts and dies within days rather than recovering. Keep a clear ring of about 4 inches (10 cm) around each crown and hoe only outside it.
Orlaya is an annual and it will die at the end of its season, usually as summer heat arrives and the plant has set seed. That is not a failure of care and nothing you do will extend it much. What you can do is delay it: keep cutting flowers so seed does not set, keep the roots cool with a shallow gravel or fine bark mulch away from the crown, and give the patch some afternoon shade in a hot climate. Between them these can add two to three weeks of flowering.
When the plants do go over, decide before you pull them whether you want volunteers next year. If you do, leave a few plants standing until the seed has dried on the head. If you do not, clear the whole patch while the seed is still green.
The notes that make next season easier
Write down how much water the patch actually got and whether the plants stood up or flopped, together with what the bed had in it the previous season. The link between a bed you enriched for something else and a floppy row of orlaya is obvious in the notes and invisible in the memory.
Record the date you put the netting in and the date the stems first grew through it, so next year you can set it in the right week rather than guessing. Note the date the plants started to decline and how hot that week was; that single figure tells you how much earlier you need to sow to get a full season where you garden.
