The two things everyone mistakes for failure
Two normal behaviors of this plant get reported as problems more often than anything else. The first is that it stops flowering in a hot spell. A plant that was covered in daisies through a bright cool spring will, after a week or two of genuinely hot weather, quietly stop producing buds. The foliage stays green and healthy, the plant keeps growing, and nothing at all appears. Gardeners feed it, water it more, move it, and conclude it has died back. It has not. It is waiting, and when the nights cool it will come back into bud within two to three weeks.
The second is that the flowers close. Osteospermum daisies shut in the evening, reopen in the morning sun, and stay closed or half closed on overcast days and through rain. Look at the plant at dusk or on a gray afternoon and you will see a mound of green with a scatter of tight buds where the flowers were. This is a light response and it is fast; it happens over roughly half an hour as the light drops. It is also why a plant in partial shade looks far emptier than its actual bud count would suggest.
Put together, these two habits mean the plant shows you the most flowers on bright cool days in spring and autumn, at the times of day when the sun is on it. If your expectation is a solid mass of open daisies from morning until dark all summer, this is the wrong plant. If you site it where the morning sun hits it and you accept a quiet spell in high summer, it is one of the longest-flowering things you can grow.
Judge how well an African daisy is flowering by looking at it in direct morning sunlight. Counting open flowers at dusk or on a wet day will tell you nothing about the plant's health.
How the heat pause works and what to do during it
Osteospermum sets flower buds most freely when nights are cool, roughly below 65F (18C), and daytime temperatures are moderate. Sustained heat above about 85F (29C), especially when the nights stay warm too, suppresses bud initiation. The plant switches from making flowers to making stems and leaves. In a climate with a hot summer, that gives a heavy spring flush, a pause of several weeks to a couple of months, and a strong autumn flush that often runs until the first frosts.
The right response to the pause is to keep the plant in good condition rather than to force it. Keep it watered so it does not check, hold off on nitrogen feed which will only push soft growth, and take the opportunity to cut it back. A shear over of about a third as the spring flush ends gives the plant something to do through the hot weeks and means it enters autumn as a dense leafy mound covered in new shoot tips, which is exactly what carries the second flush.
Where you can, reduce the heat rather than fight it. A container plant can be moved to somewhere that gets strong morning sun and is shaded from the late afternoon; that alone often shortens the pause. A mulch of gravel or bark keeps the root zone cooler and steadier. What does not work is feeding, drenching, or moving the plant into shade, which costs you flowers without cooling anything.

When it genuinely is not flowering enough
Set the heat pause aside and there are three real causes of poor flowering. The commonest is not enough direct sun. Below about six hours the plant stretches, makes fewer buds, and the buds it does make spend more of the day shut. This is a siting problem and no amount of care will fix it; move the plant.
The second is nitrogen. Rich soil, a compost mulch pushed up against the stems, or a general-purpose feed used too often all produce the same plant: large, dark, soft, leafy and nearly budless. Stop feeding entirely, and if you feed at all through the flowering season use something high in potash at half the stated strength.
The third is age and structure. A plant that has never been pinched or cut back flowers only from the ends of its stems, so as those stems lengthen the flowers get sparser and further from the center. A second-year plant that was left alone over winter is the classic case. The remedy is a hard cut back into leafy growth as spring growth restarts, which forces branching low down and puts the flowers back where you can see them.
Deadheading and getting the second flush
Deadhead consistently. The spent flowers of an African daisy do not shatter and drop; they close up into dry knobs that sit on the plant looking untidy and quietly divert energy into seed. Snip each one off following its stem back to the first pair of leaves rather than beheading it and leaving a bare stalk. Every few days through the flush is about right, and the plant responds by pushing more buds.
The single most effective thing you can do for the autumn display is the mid-season shear. As the spring flush winds down and before the plant has sat around in the heat doing nothing, take the whole plant back by about a third with shears, keeping leaves below every cut. Give it two to three weeks of regrowth and it enters the cool end of the season dense and full of shoot tips.
Do not expect much from a plant you cut hard late in the autumn. New shoots forced in cold damp weather are soft, they do not flower before the cold arrives, and they are the first thing to rot. Late-season effort is better spent on cuttings than on the parent plant.
What to record about flowering
Keep four dates each year: first flower, the day flowering visibly stopped in the heat, the day the first new buds appeared afterwards, and the last flower before cold ended it. Two seasons of that turns the summer pause from an alarming event into a predictable one, and it tells you precisely when the mid-season cut should happen in your climate.
Note the date of every cut back, how hard you cut, and how many weeks passed before flowers reappeared. This is the number that varies most between gardens, and it is the one that decides whether your autumn flush arrives in time to be worth having.
Record the position of each plant with its actual sun hours, and note which plants closed their flowers earliest in the day. Flowers that shut by mid-afternoon are telling you that something shades that spot after noon, and a note made at the time is far more reliable than trying to reconstruct it the following spring.
