Wet soil kills more plants than anything with legs
The single biggest killer of osteospermum is root and crown rot, and it is a growing condition rather than a disease you catch. The plant comes from ground that drains fast and dries hard between rains. Sat in heavy soil, in a pot with blocked drainage, or in a saucer that is kept full, the base of the stems goes soft and dark, the lower leaves yellow, and the whole plant wilts on a day when the soil is plainly wet. That combination, wilting while wet, is the diagnosis.
By the time you see it there is usually nothing to save. Do not water a wilting plant that is already damp at the roots, and do not repot it into fresh wet compost. Take clean healthy cuttings from the top growth immediately if you want to keep the plant going, then discard the parent and the soil it was in.
Prevent it structurally rather than chemically. Plant slightly proud of the surrounding soil so the crown sits above standing water, work grit into heavy ground, add about a quarter grit or perlite by volume to container mixes, empty saucers after watering, and keep organic mulches pulled back an inch or two (a few centimeters) from the stems. Cold and wet together is the dangerous combination, so a plant that is fine all summer can still rot in a wet winter.
A plant that wilts while its soil is wet has a root problem, not a water shortage. Watering it again is the most common way people finish off a plant that cuttings could still have rescued.
Aphids, whitefly and thrips on soft growth
Aphids are the usual insect problem and they go straight for the softest thing on the plant: unopened flower buds and the tips of new shoots. Look at the underside of the top few leaves and inside the developing buds. Signs are sticky honeydew on the leaves below, a black sooty film growing on that honeydew, buds that open lopsided or fail to open at all, and ants running up and down the stems. Ants farm aphids, so an ant trail on a healthy-looking plant means checking the tips.
Deal with them early and mechanically. A firm jet of water over the shoot tips every couple of days knocks most of a small population off, and squashing the colony between finger and thumb works on a single plant. If it has got away from you, an insecticidal soap or a horticultural oil sprayed to wet the undersides of leaves and repeated after a week will clear it. Spray in the evening or on an overcast day, never onto foliage in full sun, and never onto open flowers where bees are working.
Whitefly behave similarly and are most often a problem on plants overwintered indoors or in a greenhouse, where a small population in autumn becomes a large one by late winter. Thrips are subtler: they cause a fine silvery flecking on petals and distorted, streaked flowers, and you often see the damage before you see the insect. All three are far worse on plants that have been pushed with nitrogen feed, because soft lush growth is exactly what they feed on.

Fungal problems and how to keep them out
Downy mildew is the fungal problem most likely to hit an African daisy in a cool damp spell. It shows as pale yellow blotches on the upper surfaces of leaves with a grayish or purplish fuzz on the undersides directly beneath them. It spreads fast in still humid air on foliage that stays wet, so it is worst in crowded plantings and on plants that get watered over the top in the evening. Remove affected leaves as soon as you see them, bin rather than compost them, and open the plant up by thinning congested stems.
Gray mold turns up on dead flowers and damaged stems in wet weather and then moves into healthy tissue from there. Prompt deadheading is most of the prevention, because a plant carrying dozens of dead flowers through a wet week is giving the fungus a foothold at every one of them. Clear fallen debris from around the crown for the same reason.
Almost all fungal trouble on this plant is an airflow and wetness problem rather than a bad-luck problem. Space plants far enough apart that they are not touching by midsummer, roughly twelve to eighteen inches (30 to 45 cm) depending on how vigorous they are, water at the base in the morning so foliage dries within the hour, and resist the urge to overfeed, since soft crowded growth is the perfect target.
Knowing when to give up on a plant
There is a point where treating an osteospermum stops making sense, and recognizing it early saves the rest of your plants. Any plant with soft, dark, collapsing stems at soil level is finished, whatever the foliage above looks like. Any plant that wilts every afternoon and does not recover overnight has lost its roots. Any plant with mildew through most of its leaves after you have already stripped the affected ones is a source of spores for everything nearby.
In each of those cases, take cuttings from the cleanest, firmest, disease-free top growth you can find first, then pull the plant. Do not compost material carrying downy mildew or rot. If the plant was in a container, wash the pot before reusing it and do not reuse the mix.
Because osteospermum is short-lived and easy to root, this decision is much cheaper than it feels. A handful of cuttings taken from a plant you are about to discard will give you better plants next season than nursing a sick one through would have.
What to record
Write down the date you first saw each problem and on which plant. Pest and disease timings repeat year to year with surprising consistency, and knowing that aphids appear on your plants in the last weeks of spring lets you start checking the shoot tips a fortnight beforehand rather than discovering a colony that has already ruined the buds.
Note the position of every plant that rotted, and what the drainage was like there. A map of the wet corners of your garden is one of the most useful things you can build, and rotted African daisies are excellent evidence for it. Note the same for containers: which mix, which pot, whether it stood in a saucer.
Record what you sprayed, at what strength, and whether it actually worked, along with anything you tried that did not. Two seasons of that turns pest control from guesswork into a short reliable routine, and it stops you repeating treatments that never helped.
