Water hardly at all, then water heavily at flowering
Peas grown in spring in reasonable soil often need no watering at all until they flower. The plants are growing while the ground is still cool and damp, roots go down 18 inches (45 cm) or more, and watering a young pea row simply encourages shallow roots that then suffer the moment it turns warm. Restraint in the first six weeks pays you back later.
Everything changes when the first flowers open. From flowering until the last pod is picked, the plant is filling seed and water shortage at that stage is the main reason for flat, half-empty pods. In a dry spell give the row a thorough soak of about a gallon per square foot, roughly 20 to 25 liters per square meter, once or twice a week. A daily sprinkle wets the top inch and does nothing useful.

Water the soil, not the plants. Wet foliage in a crowded row is how powdery mildew and downy mildew get their start, and both arrive early enough as it is.
Do not feed them nitrogen
Peas host rhizobium bacteria in nodules on their roots, and those nodules pull nitrogen out of the air. Add nitrogen fertilizer on top and the plant stops bothering with its own nodules, puts everything into stem and leaf, and produces a tall dark green row with disappointing pods. If your peas are lush and climbing hard but flowering late, over-feeding is usually the reason.
What peas do want is phosphorus and potassium, and a soil that is not acidic. Work compost into the bed before sowing, add lime if a test shows the pH is below about 6.0, and that is the whole feeding program for most gardens. On very poor sandy ground a single dressing of a low-nitrogen general fertilizer at flowering is reasonable, and nothing beyond that.
- Check the roots if growth is poor Lift one weak plant and look at the roots. Pink or reddish nodules the size of a pinhead mean nitrogen fixation is working. White or absent nodules on new ground means an inoculant would have helped.
- Lime an acid bed before sowing, not during Peas want pH 6.0 to 7.0. Lime works slowly, so apply it weeks ahead of sowing rather than trying to correct a growing crop.
- Read the leaf color Very dark, soft, oversized leaves with few flowers means too much nitrogen. Pale yellow-green leaves across the whole plant on new ground means the nodules never formed.
Mulch does the job that watering cannot
Peas resent hot soil more than they resent dry soil. Once the surface temperature climbs, the roots slow, the plant ages fast, and flowering shuts down. Two inches (5 cm) of straw, grass clippings or compost laid along the row once the plants are six inches (15 cm) tall keeps the root zone several degrees cooler and holds moisture between waterings.
Lay the mulch after a rain or a thorough watering, never onto dry soil, and keep it an inch clear of the stems so the base of the plant can dry. In an overwintered crop the same mulch protects the crowns from frost heave, which lifts young plants out of the ground and breaks their roots.
- Water first, then mulch Mulch traps whatever moisture state the soil is in. Soak the bed thoroughly, let the surface drain, then lay the mulch.
- Keep it off the stems Leave a clear inch (2.5 cm) around each stem. Damp mulch packed against the base invites stem rot and gives slugs somewhere to sit.
- Weed before you cover Peas have shallow surface roots and hoeing close to them does real damage. Weed once by hand, then mulch and stop disturbing the soil.
Reading the plant when something is off
Most mid season pea complaints come down to water, heat or nitrogen, and they look similar at a glance. Work down from the top of the plant: what the growing tip and the flowers are doing tells you more than the old leaves at the base, which yellow naturally as the crop ages.
- Flowers open then drop without setting Heat, most likely. Peas abort flowers above about 80F (27C). Mulch, water deeply and accept that the crop is finishing; there is no fertilizer fix.
- Pods are flat and half empty Water shortage during pod fill, or a plant carrying more pods than it can supply. Soak the row properly and keep picking so the load comes down.
- Tall, dark green, hardly any flowers Too much nitrogen. Stop feeding entirely. The plant will come into flower eventually, later than it should have.
- Whole plant pale and stunted from early on Either acid soil or no nodules. Lift a plant and check the roots, then correct the pH for next season and use an inoculant.
- Lower leaves yellow while the top grows on Normal ageing in a cropping plant. Only worry if the yellowing climbs fast or comes with wilting, which points to root rot.
What to write down this season
Peas run on a short, weather-driven schedule and the useful numbers are specific to your garden. Note the date the first flower opened, the date of the first picking, and the date the plants stopped setting pods because of heat. Those three dates together tell you exactly how long your pea window is.
Add the bed you used and whether you watered at flowering. A season where you soaked the row at flowering and one where you did not will show a difference in pod fill you can see, and once you have written both down you will never skip that watering again.
