Silvery roots mean thirsty, green roots mean wet
A moth orchid root is wrapped in a spongy white layer called velamen, and that layer is a moisture gauge you can read from across the room. When it is full of water it turns translucent and the green root tissue underneath shows through, so the root looks bright green. As it dries, the velamen fills with air and turns matt silver-gray. A plant whose roots have all gone silver is ready for water. A plant whose roots are still green does not need any, whatever the day of the week.
This is why moth orchids are so often sold in clear plastic pots. It is not decoration. Keep the plant in that clear inner pot even if you drop it into a prettier cover pot, and lift it out to look before every watering. Ten seconds of looking replaces every rule of thumb you have ever read.
Two things can mislead you. Roots pressed against the wall of the pot dry faster than roots buried in the middle, so judge by the general color of the mass rather than by the one root you can see best. And aerial roots wandering out into the room live at a different moisture level from the ones in the bark; they will look silver most of the time and that is normal. Judge by what is inside the pot.
If you cannot see into the pot, use weight instead. Pick it up straight after a thorough watering and again three days later, and the difference is obvious. A pot that still feels heavy is still wet. With bark, weight is a reliable second opinion, because bark holds far less water than compost and the swing between wet and dry is large.

How to water: soak it through, then let every drop drain
Moth orchids are watered generously but rarely. A splash on the surface wets the top inch of bark and nothing else, so the roots at the bottom of the pot stay dry while the crown stays damp, which is exactly the wrong way round. When you water, water properly, and then leave the plant alone until the roots have gone silver again.
- Lift the inner pot out of any cover pot Cover pots with no drainage hole are the most common way a moth orchid is drowned. Take the plant out and carry it to the sink so the water has somewhere to go.
- Run tepid water through the bark for about thirty seconds Pour slowly over the surface of the bark until it runs freely from the holes in the base. Use water at room temperature. Cold water straight from the tap chills the roots and can mark the leaves and buds.
- Keep the water off the crown Aim the flow at the bark around the edge of the pot, not into the center where the leaves meet. Tilt the plant slightly so nothing pools between the leaves.
- Let it drain for five to ten minutes Stand the pot on the draining board until dripping stops. Bark is only free-draining if you actually let it drain, and the last inch of standing water is what rots roots.
- Tip out any water trapped in the crown or the cover pot Turn the plant on its side and blot the center with kitchen paper. Empty the cover pot before the plant goes back into it, so the base is never standing in a reservoir.
Why ice cubes are bad advice
You will see moth orchids sold with a label telling you to drop three ice cubes on the bark once a week. Ignore it. Phalaenopsis are tropical epiphytes from warm forests, and their roots have no experience of anything near freezing. Melting ice sits against the velamen at close to 32F (0C) and damages the root tissue it touches, which shows up weeks later as dead patches and a plant that dries out too fast because it has fewer working roots.
The volume is wrong as well as the temperature. Three cubes is roughly two fluid ounces (60 ml) of water, dribbled onto one small area of the surface. It never reaches the base of the pot. What it does reach is the crown, because ice sitting on bark melts slowly in exactly the spot you least want water to linger. A moth orchid watered this way slowly starves at the roots while staying damp at the neck.
The advice exists because it is easy to print on a label, not because it is how the plant works. Water at room temperature, water the whole pot, and space the waterings out.
If you have been using ice cubes, do not panic. Switch to a proper soak and check the roots at the next repot. Dead roots will not recover, but a plant with a third of its roots intact regrows the rest within a season once the watering is right.
Crown rot: water that sits in the center of the plant
The single fastest way to kill a moth orchid is to let water stand in the crown, the tight cup where the leaves join the stem. Water sitting there overnight in a cool room lets bacterial soft rot in, and the rot moves down into the growing point. The first sign is a leaf that turns translucent yellow-brown at its base and pulls away from the stem with almost no resistance, sometimes with a foul smell. Once the growing point is gone, the plant will never make another leaf.
Prevention is entirely mechanical. Water in the morning rather than at night, so any splashes dry within the hour. Keep the flow away from the center. After watering, and after misting or a shower, tilt the plant and blot the crown dry with a twist of kitchen paper. Do not leave a plant sitting in a still, cold, dark room with a wet crown.
If you catch it early, cut away every soft brown part with a sterile blade until you are into clean firm tissue, keep the plant dry for a week, and give it good air movement. A plant that loses its crown can occasionally throw a basal keiki from the stem below the damage, but treat that as a bonus rather than a plan.
How often, and how the interval changes
There is no fixed number of days, because the interval depends on the medium, the pot, the temperature and the humidity. What follows is the range most indoor plants fall into. Use it to know roughly when to start looking at the roots, not as a schedule to follow blindly.
Coarse bark in a plastic pot in a warm room typically wants water every seven to ten days. The same plant in a clay pot, or in finer bark, or in a room at 80F (27C) with the heating on, may want it every five. A plant packed in sphagnum moss, which many are when sold, can go two or even three weeks, and moss is where most overwatering happens because the surface looks dry long before the core is.

What to write down
Keep a note of the date of every watering for one full year, along with one word for the state of the roots when you did it: green, patchy or silver. After a few months you can look back and see that your plant wanted water every six days in midsummer and every twelve in the cool part of autumn, which is far more useful than any general advice, because it is measured on your window, your bark and your heating.
Record the date you last repotted and what medium you used, because the interval changes completely when fresh coarse bark replaces old collapsed bark. Note the day you switch feeding on and off, and note the date of anything unusual: a wrinkled leaf, a root that went brown, a bud that dropped. When something goes wrong the useful question is almost always what the watering looked like in the three weeks before, and only a written record can answer it.
