Acid soil is not optional
Pieris is an ericaceous shrub, a close relative of the rhododendrons and heathers, and it feeds the way they do. It wants soil between pH 4.5 and 5.5. In that band the roots pull in iron and manganese without effort and the mature leaves hold a dark, slightly glossy green all year. Take the soil above about pH 6.0 and both nutrients lock up into forms the plant cannot use, even when the soil is full of them.
The symptom is easy to read once you know it. The leaf blade fades to pale yellow while the veins stay sharp and dark green, so the leaf looks like a green net over a yellow ground. It shows on the newest leaves first, because iron does not travel around inside the plant and the youngest growth is served last. Yellowing that is even across the whole leaf, veins included, and starts on the oldest leaves low down, is a different problem: shortage of nitrogen, or roots sitting wet.
Test before you treat, because the two faults are cured in opposite ways. A cheap soil kit gives you an answer in ten minutes. Take the sample from four inches (10 cm) down rather than from the surface, where mulch and fertilizer skew the reading. On genuinely chalky or limestone ground no amount of sulfur wins in the long run, and the honest answer is a large container of acidic potting mix instead of a hole in the border.

Everything alkaline that gets near the root zone counts. Wood ash, mushroom compost, spent mortar, rubble under a new path and the washings off a freshly rendered wall will all push a pieris into chlorosis within two seasons, however good the compost was when you planted it.
Shallow roots, so the top few inches decide everything
The root system is fine, fibrous and shallow. Almost all of it sits in the top eight inches (20 cm) of soil, spreading out beyond the branch tips rather than driving down. That has two consequences. The plant dries out faster than its size suggests, and anything you do to the surface, good or bad, is done directly to the roots.
So water by soaking rather than sprinkling. When the top two inches (5 cm) are dry, give enough that the water reaches six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) down, which on most soils means two or three gallons (8 to 12 liters) for an established shrub, poured slowly enough that it soaks in rather than running off the mulch. A daily splash keeps the surface damp and trains the roots even shallower, which is the opposite of what you want going into a dry summer.
Rainwater is worth collecting for this plant. Hard tap water carries dissolved lime, and on a container-grown pieris it will lift the compost pH out of the useful range inside a couple of seasons. In the ground the effect is slower but it is still there on a plant you water often.
Never dig or hoe under the canopy. You cannot cultivate around a pieris without tearing through feeding roots, and the plant answers with a poor flush the following spring. Weed by hand, and keep the mulch topped up so there is little to weed.
- Check moisture with a finger, not a schedule Push a finger through the mulch into the soil. Damp at two inches (5 cm) means wait. Dry at that depth means water now, and water properly rather than lightly.
- Soak, then leave it alone Two or three gallons (8 to 12 liters) delivered slowly over the whole root spread, not just at the stem. Then nothing until the top two inches dry again, which in cool weather may be a fortnight.
- Mulch two to three inches deep every year Pine bark, pine needles or composted conifer chippings, spread out to the branch tips and pulled back an inch (2.5 cm) from the stems. It holds moisture, keeps the pH down as it rots and stops the surface baking.
- Feed once, in spring, and lightly A slow-release acid-plant or ericaceous fertilizer scattered over the root area as growth begins is the whole feeding program. Heavy or late nitrogen pushes soft shoots that frost then kills.
The red new growth is the point, and it is fragile
The flush of new leaves in spring comes out bright red, coral or bronze depending on the plant, holds that color for several weeks and then hardens off to green. It is the reason most people grow the shrub, and it is also the most vulnerable tissue on it. Those young leaves have not yet built their waxy surface, so a late frost blackens them and a cold drying wind scorches the edges brown within a day.
Position is what protects them. Give the plant shelter from the prevailing wind, a wall, a hedge or the body of another shrub, and keep it out of direct early morning sun. Frosted tissue that thaws slowly in shade often recovers; the same tissue hit by low sun at dawn thaws fast, the cells rupture and the leaves go black. An east-facing open aspect is the single worst place to put a pieris.
Light shade or dappled shade for part of the day suits it best. Deep shade gives you a thin plant with weak color and few flower buds. Full hot sun bleaches the mature leaves to a tired yellow-green and creates exactly the dry, warm conditions that lace bug breeds in. What you are aiming for is bright but filtered light, with cover overhead if you can manage it.
If a hard frost is forecast while the flush is out, throw row cover over the plant in the evening and take it off in the morning. It is a crude measure but it saves the display, and on a small shrub it takes two minutes.
What to write down
Keep a short record for this plant and next spring gets easier to manage. Note the date the new flush first shows color and the date it hardens to green, because that is your frost-risk window and it repeats within a week or so year on year. Note any night the flush was hit, and what the sky was doing, so you learn whether it is frost or wind that catches your particular spot.
Record the soil pH with the date each time you test, not just the number, so you can see whether the reading is drifting upward and how fast. Note when you last applied sulfur or chelated iron and at what rate. Record the first date you see lace bug stippling each year, and the aspect of the branch it appeared on, because that pest comes back to the same warm dry side of the same plant.
Finally, note the flowering dates and the date you pruned. Pieris sets next year's buds in summer, so a note that says you cut it late explains a bare spring the following year better than any amount of guessing.
One page per shrub is enough. The entries that pay off most are the frost dates and the pH readings, because both are slow-moving patterns you cannot hold in your head across a winter.
