Wet and cold is the combination that kills
Polyscias tolerates a lot of things badly, but nothing as badly as roots that sit cold and saturated. Its fine roots need air in the compost, and waterlogged mix has none. Once roots start dying they stop taking up water, which makes the compost stay wet for even longer, which kills more roots. The plant then drops leaves, and the owner, seeing a wilting plant, waters it again.
That feedback loop is the single most common way this plant is lost. It matters most in the cold half of the year, when the plant is using little water, evaporation is slow, and the pot may be standing somewhere genuinely chilly. Warm and slightly dry is a condition an aralia shrugs off. Cold and wet is one it does not survive.
There is no watering interval that works all year. A pot that needs water every four days in high summer may go two or three weeks in winter. Anyone watering on a fixed weekly routine is drowning the plant for half the year.
The finger test, and how to read it
Push a finger about an inch (2.5 cm) into the compost, near the edge of the pot rather than into the middle of the root ball. If it comes out with mix clinging to it and feels cool and damp, do not water. If it comes out clean and the mix feels dry at that depth, water. That single check replaces every schedule.
Weight is the other reliable test, and it is the better one for a large plant. Lift the pot just after a thorough watering and again a week later, and you will quickly learn what a wet pot and a dry pot feel like. A pot that still feels heavy does not need water, whatever the surface looks like, because compost surfaces dry off long before the root zone does.

Watering properly when you do water
Watering an aralia is not a matter of small frequent sips. Little and often keeps the surface wet, leaves the lower root ball dry and lets salts build up in the mix. Water thoroughly and then let the pot approach dryness before doing it again.
- Use room-temperature water Cold water straight from the tap chills the root zone of a plant that is already intolerant of cold. Fill a can and let it stand in the room for an hour before using it, particularly in winter.
- Water all round the surface until it runs out of the base Pour steadily, moving around the whole pot rather than into one spot, and keep going until water comes freely from the drainage holes. This wets the entire root ball and flushes accumulated fertilizer salts out.
- Let it drain completely, then empty the saucer Give it several minutes to finish draining and tip away everything that collects underneath. A pot standing in half an inch (1 cm) of water has a permanently saturated base, and that is where root rot starts.
- Take it out of the cachepot to water If the plant lives in a decorative outer container, lift the inner pot out, water it at a sink, let it drain and put it back. Water invisibly pooling in the bottom of a cachepot is one of the most common causes of rot in houseplants.
- Rewet a bone-dry pot by soaking If the mix has dried out completely and water runs straight down the sides, stand the pot in a few inches (8 cm) of water for twenty to thirty minutes so the root ball reabsorbs, then drain it fully. Do not just keep pouring from the top.
Never leave the pot standing in a tray of water to keep it moist. If you use a gravel tray for humidity, the base of the pot must sit above the waterline, not in it.
Reading the plant when something has gone wrong
Overwatering and underwatering can look similar from a distance: both produce a droopy plant with yellowing or falling leaves. The way to separate them is not to look at the leaves but to feel the compost and, if necessary, to look at the roots. A wilting plant in wet compost is drowning, and giving it more water makes it worse.
There is a third possibility that trips people up constantly with this plant. If it has recently been moved to a new room or a new light level, the leaf drop is probably a reaction to that change rather than to your watering at all. In that case the compost is often perfectly fine, and the right response is to water less than usual, because a plant with a fraction of its leaves uses a fraction of the water.

Humidity is not watering
An aralia wants humid air and moderately dry compost at the same time, and confusing those two needs causes real damage. Brown, crisp leaflet tips are a symptom of dry air, not of a thirsty root ball, and answering them with more water at the roots leads straight to rot. Raise the humidity instead: stand the pot on a wide tray of damp gravel with the base clear of the water, group plants together, and keep the plant well away from radiators and heating vents.
Misting the foliage does raise humidity briefly and helps discourage spider mites, but it is not a substitute for a humidity tray and it does nothing for the roots. Aim for around 50 percent humidity in the air and a compost that dries slightly between waterings, and you have this plant's two requirements met at once.
Keep a note of the date of each watering for a few months, along with a word on how dry the compost was when you checked. Within a season you will know how many days your particular pot takes to dry in summer and in winter, and that pair of numbers is worth more than any general rule.
