Choose the position once and commit to it
Polyscias is the classic sulker among houseplants. Move it from a shop to a house, from one room to another, or even from one side of a room to the other, and within a fortnight it will shed a large share of its leaves. This is not a disease and it is not something you did wrong on the day. It is the plant re-balancing its foliage against the new light level, and it regrows over the following six to ten weeks provided the roots stay healthy.
This behavior changes how you should think about placement. With most houseplants you can experiment, watch, and shuffle them around until they look happy. With an aralia every experiment costs you two months of bare stems. Work out the right spot on paper first, put the plant there, and then resist every urge to improve things.
The single most common way to kill an aralia is to react to the leaf drop by repotting it, feeding it and moving it somewhere brighter. All three of those stress a plant that is already recovering. The correct response to post-move leaf drop is to do nothing.
The light it actually wants
Bright indirect light is what keeps an aralia dense and well colored. In practice that means within a few feet of a window that gets good daylight but not hours of direct sun on the foliage. An east-facing window is close to ideal. A south or west window works if the plant is set back or filtered through a sheer curtain, because several hours of hot midday sun through glass will bleach and scorch the fine leaflets.
Too little light is the slower failure. A plant in a dim corner does not die; it stretches. The gaps between leaves lengthen, new leaflets come in smaller, and the lower part of the plant gives up its leaves first, which produces the bare-legged look people complain about. If your aralia is getting leggy and the watering is sound, the light is the problem.

Warmth matters more than light
If you have to choose between a bright cold spot and a slightly dimmer warm one, take the warm one. Polyscias comes from consistently tropical conditions and it has very little tolerance for cold. Keep it above 60F (16C) at all times, aim for a normal room range of 65 to 80F (18 to 27C), and treat anything approaching 50F (10C) as damaging rather than merely uncomfortable.
Cold is worst when it is combined with wet compost, which is why an aralia standing on a chilly tiled floor near a door in winter is in the most dangerous position in the house. Cold roots cannot take up water, the compost stays saturated, and the roots rot. The leaf drop that follows looks identical to ordinary post-move sulking, but this version does not recover.
- Check the floor, not the air Put your hand flat on the surface the pot stands on during the coldest part of a winter evening. A cold stone or tile floor pulls heat out of the root ball all night. Stand the pot on a cork mat, a wooden board or a plant stand to break that contact.
- Find the drafts before winter Hold a strip of tissue at plant height near the position on a cold windy day. If it moves, cold outside air is washing over the plant every time the door opens or the wind gusts. Move the plant a few feet clear of that airflow while the weather is still mild.
- Get it away from heat sources A radiator, a wood stove or a forced-air vent does the opposite damage: it dries the air around the foliage to the point where spider mites thrive and leaflet tips brown off. Keep at least three feet (1 m) between the plant and any heat source.
- Raise the humidity where it stands Stand the pot on a wide tray of damp gravel with the pot base clear of the water, or group it with other plants. Aim for 50 percent humidity or better. This is a permanent fixture of the position, not a treatment you apply when things go wrong.
Moving it outdoors, and moving it back
An aralia can spend the warm months outside in a sheltered, shaded spot and it will often put on good growth there. The cost is that both the trip out and the trip back count as changes of light and temperature, so you should expect leaf drop twice a year in exchange. Many people decide the growth is not worth the bare stems and keep the plant indoors permanently, which is a perfectly good decision.
If you do move it out, go in stages. Give it a week in full shade before it sees any dappled light, and never put a plant that has been indoors all winter straight into sun. Bring it back in well before nights drop toward 55F (13C), not after the first cold snap, and check the whole plant for pests before it re-enters the house.

Inspect the undersides of the foliage and the stems for scale and mites before the plant comes back indoors. An outdoor summer is the usual way pests enter a houseplant collection.
Record where it stood and what happened
Because this plant reacts so strongly to position, its history is genuinely useful information. Write down the date it arrived or was moved, the exact spot, roughly how far it sits from the window and which direction that window faces. Then note the date leaf drop started, the date it stopped, and the date you saw the first new shoots.
That short record answers the question everyone asks in week three: is this normal, or is it dying? If your own notes say the last move cost eight weeks of bare stems before new growth appeared, you will wait it out calmly instead of repotting a recovering plant. Add a note of the winter minimum temperature at that position, because a spot that seems fine in autumn can be the coldest place in the house by midwinter.
