Even water beats plenty of water
A pomegranate will survive on very little water. It will not produce sound fruit on erratic water. The pattern that ruins crops is a long dry spell that shrinks the fruit and hardens the skin, followed by heavy irrigation or heavy rain that pumps the flesh full again faster than the rigid skin can stretch. The skin fails, the fruit splits, and every split fruit is lost to mold within a week.
So the aim is not a target volume, it is an absence of swings. Water deeply and infrequently on a rhythm and keep to it: roughly once every seven to ten days through the heat of summer for a tree in the ground, enough to wet the soil twelve to eighteen inches (30 to 45 cm) down. Little and often is worse than nothing, because it keeps roots shallow. From the point where fruit starts coloring, hold the rhythm steady rather than cutting water off; a sudden stop is just as dangerous as a sudden soaking.

A three to four inch (8 to 10 cm) mulch of gravel, bark or straw over the root zone, kept clear of the trunk itself, does more to prevent splitting than any change to your watering can. It flattens out the dry-to-wet swing that the tree feels.
Feed almost nothing
Pomegranate evolved on thin ground and it fruits best when it is slightly hungry. Nitrogen is the enemy of the crop. A well-fed tree makes long soft whippy shoots, huge dark leaves, a mass of vegetative suckers, and very few flowers, and the flowers it does make drop rather than set. If your tree is putting on more than about two feet (60 cm) of extension growth a year and looks glossy and lush, it is being overfed, whether by you or by the lawn feed drifting in from nearby.
For a mature tree in reasonable soil, an annual handful of a balanced granular feed in early spring is enough, or nothing at all if the growth is already vigorous. Container plants are the exception, because watering flushes nutrients out of the pot; give those a dilute balanced liquid feed every three to four weeks through the growing season only, and stop entirely by late summer so the wood hardens before winter.

Suckers: the job that never ends
Pomegranate suckers from the base constantly. It is not a sign of stress or of a grafted rootstock breaking through; it is simply how the plant grows, as a thicket rather than a tree. Left alone, a young plant turns into a dense stool of twenty thin stems that shade each other, carry almost no fruit, and make harvesting and spraying impossible.
Deal with them two or three times a season rather than once a year. Rub or snap off soft young suckers with your thumb while they are green and under six inches (15 cm) tall; they come away cleanly and do not regrow from the same point. Once a sucker has hardened into woody stem you have to cut it, it leaves a stub, and the stub throws two more. If you are growing a multi-stem bush, choose your four to six permanent trunks early and then treat every later sucker as a weed. Also watch for suckers coming up through the mulch a foot (30 cm) or more from the trunk, on their own roots; those need to be traced back and cut at the root, not snipped at ground level.
- Walk the base in late spring Right after the main flush of growth starts, rub off everything green at the base except the trunks you have chosen to keep. This is the pass that matters most, and it takes minutes.
- Repeat in midsummer A second flush follows the first. Removing these keeps light into the center of the bush while the fruit is swelling, which improves color on the lower fruit.
- Cut woody escapees in winter Anything that got away and hardened comes out flush with the base during dormant pruning, using loppers or a pruning saw. Cut flush, not leaving a stub.
- Trace the wandering ones For a sucker away from the trunk, scrape the soil back to find the running root, and cut it at the root rather than at soil level. Cutting the top only guarantees it returns.
Thinning fruit and supporting the branches
A pomegranate in a good year will set far more fruit than it can finish. Clusters of three to five fruitlets forming at one node all compete, and touching fruit trap moisture between them, which is where splitting and mold start. Thin each cluster to one fruit once the fruitlets reach about walnut size, keeping the largest and best-shaped, and aim for fruit spaced roughly six inches (15 cm) apart along the branch.
The branches are brittle and a loaded branch bends far more than you expect once the fruit reaches full size, sometimes to the point of splitting at the crotch. Check the heaviest branches in late summer and prop or tie the ones that are hanging into the mulch. Fruit resting on damp soil or mulch will rot on the underside long before it is ripe.
Keep a simple note each year of the date of first flower, the date you thinned, and the date the first fruit was genuinely ripe. After two or three seasons you will know your own tree's ripening window, and you can stop guessing whether to pick or wait.
