Site it for your coldest night, not your warmest month
Of the citrus most gardeners grow, the pomelo has the least tolerance for cold. Where a mandarin shrugs off a light frost and a kumquat barely notices one, a pomelo loses young flush at around 30F (-1C) and suffers real wood damage in the high twenties Fahrenheit (around -3C). Any tree carrying fruit takes the damage in the fruit first: the segments freeze, thaw to mush and drop weeks later, and you find out about a frost you slept through only when the crop goes soft on the branch.
That single fact should drive the whole planting decision. Walk the garden on the coldest still night of the year with a thermometer rather than choosing a site in the growing season when everywhere looks kind. Cold air behaves like water: it runs downhill and pools against walls, hedges and closed fences, and the low corner of a garden can sit five degrees Fahrenheit (3C) below a slight rise thirty feet away. A pomelo planted in that pool will be a struggling tree for its whole life, and no amount of feeding will fix a siting mistake.
The best position in most gardens is a slight rise, in full sun for at least eight hours, with a sun-facing wall or the bulk of a building on the cold side. Masonry absorbs heat all day and releases it through the night, and that stored warmth is worth several degrees exactly when it counts. It also lengthens the ripening window, which matters more for a pomelo than for any other citrus because the fruit needs so many months on the tree.

Plant high and keep the graft union clear
Almost every pomelo you buy is grafted, and the join sits somewhere in the lowest six to twelve inches (15-30 cm) of the trunk as a change of angle or bark texture. The rootstock underneath it is what gives the tree its vigor, its tolerance of your soil and much of its disease resistance. If that union ends up buried, the fruiting wood roots into the soil on its own account, the rootstock is bypassed, and every advantage you paid for quietly disappears over the following years.
So set the rootball one to two inches (3-5 cm) proud of the surrounding soil and expect the bed to settle a little further. Dig the hole two to three times the width of the rootball but no deeper than the rootball itself, and backfill with the soil you dug out rather than with compost. A compost-rich hole in ordinary ground becomes a sump that holds water and discourages roots from leaving it, which is the opposite of what a shallow-rooted citrus needs.
Keep mulch pulled back into a clear ring four to six inches (10-15 cm) around the trunk, and scrape the soil back once a year to look at the union with your own eyes. Beds settle, mulch creeps, and a graft that was four inches (10 cm) clear on planting day can be at soil level five years later without anyone noticing.
- Test the drainage before you dig the real hole Dig a hole a foot (30 cm) deep, fill it with water, let it drain away, then fill it again. If the second filling has not gone within four hours, plant on a raised mound eight to twelve inches (20-30 cm) high instead of in the ground.
- Dig wide and shallow Make the hole two to three times the rootball width and exactly the rootball depth. Rough up the sides so roots are not turned back by a smooth glazed wall, particularly in clay soil where a spade leaves a polished face.
- Free the circling roots If the rootball is dense, slice the outer inch (2-3 cm) from top to bottom in three or four places and pull the ends outward. Roots left circling keep circling and eventually girdle the trunk.
- Sight the level with a cane Lay a straight cane across the hole. The rootball surface goes one to two inches (3-5 cm) above grade and the graft union should finish at least four inches (10 cm) above the settled soil surface.
- Water in rather than tread in Firm the backfill with water, not with your heel. Build a low ring of soil at the edge of the rootball to hold water over the roots, and mulch that ring while leaving the trunk bare.
The first two years belong to the framework
A young pomelo will try to flower and set fruit long before it can carry any. Strip the flowers in the first year and take off all but two or three fruit in the second, and none at all if the tree is under about four feet (1.2 m) of framework. This feels wasteful every single time and it is the highest return available to you. A pomelo fruit can weigh two to four pounds (1-2 kg), which is enough to bend a young branch permanently down to the ground and leave the tree with a lopsided, weak-crotched shape it never grows out of.
Water the rootball itself rather than the whole bed for the first summer: three to five gallons (12-20 liters) delivered slowly into the basin every three or four days in warm weather. The rootball is still pot-shaped and cannot yet draw on the surrounding soil. Once you see new flush hardening off, the roots have moved out and you can begin a light nitrogen feed and widen the watering circle.
Do not stake rigidly unless the site is genuinely exposed. A trunk allowed to flex thickens and stiffens on its own, and a pomelo needs that thickness more than most citrus because of what it will eventually be asked to hold up. Where a stake is unavoidable, use a low one with a soft wide tie and take it away after one full year.
In a marginal winter climate, seriously consider growing a pomelo in a large container that can be wheeled to shelter, rather than planting one in the ground and losing it in a bad year. A half-barrel sized pot on a wheeled base is an honest answer to a climate that dips below the high twenties Fahrenheit (around -3C).
Write down what you cannot see later
Record the planting date, the rootstock if the label names it, and the height of the graft union above the soil in inches. That last number is a baseline you will use for decades: when you measure it again in five years and it reads two inches lower, you know the bed has settled and it is time to pull soil back rather than wondering whether you misremembered.
Note the tree's exact position measured from two fixed things, such as a house corner and a fence post, along with the result of your drainage test and the lowest temperature you actually recorded at that spot over the first winter. Those three facts together tell you, years later, whether a slow decline is a drainage problem, a cold problem or neither, and they are almost impossible to reconstruct from memory.
