Almost everything follows the flush
Citrus pests are timed to soft new growth. Aphids, leafminer, scale crawlers and mites all build on the tender flush and largely ignore hardened leaves, which is why the same tree can look infested in early summer and clean two months later without anything being done. Once you understand that rhythm, most of your management is timing rather than spraying.
The practical consequence is that late nitrogen is a pest decision, not just a nutrition one. Feeding into late summer and autumn pushes an extra soft flush at exactly the point when pest populations are at their peak and the tree has no season left in which to harden it. Stopping nitrogen by mid summer removes the food supply for the worst of the late damage.
Walk the tree weekly during a flush and look at the underside of the newest leaves, at the growing tips, and at the joins between branches. That is where every one of the common problems shows first, days or weeks before anything is visible from a distance.

Leafminer looks worse than it is
Silvery winding tunnels under the leaf surface, edges rolled and puckered, whole new shoots looking wrecked: citrus leafminer is the most alarming-looking and least dangerous thing most ponkan growers will meet. The larva mines only within young, soft leaves. Once a leaf has hardened it cannot be attacked, and the damage you are looking at is finished.
A mature tree with a full canopy carries far more leaf than it needs, so heavy leafminer damage on one flush does not measurably reduce the crop. On a newly planted tree the calculation changes, because a young tree has few leaves and needs every one; there, protecting the flush is worth doing.
Do not pick off damaged leaves. A mined leaf still photosynthesises, removing it costs the tree more than the miner did, and the larva has usually left already. Do not prune to remove the damage either, because that stimulates a further flush of exactly the soft growth the next generation wants.
- Time the flush rather than chasing the insect Concentrate feeding and any pruning so that flushes occur early in the season when leafminer numbers are still low, and avoid pushing new growth in late summer when populations peak.
- Protect only young trees On a tree in its first two or three years, treat the soft flush with horticultural oil applied every seven to ten days while the leaves are expanding. Oil deters egg laying; it does not reach a larva already inside the leaf.
- Leave mined leaves alone Do not strip damaged foliage. The leaf still works, the pest has moved on, and removal simply reduces the leaf area the tree has left for the season.
- Skip broad-spectrum insecticides Sprays that kill on contact cannot reach a larva inside a leaf, and they remove the parasitic wasps that do most of the real control. Using them usually makes the following flush worse.
Sooty mold is a symptom, not a disease. The black film grows on honeydew excreted by aphids, scale or whitefly. Deal with the insect and the ants farming it, and the mold weathers off on its own; washing the leaves without controlling the insect achieves nothing.
The problems that are really site errors
A good share of what gets reported as disease on a ponkan is the site or the watering. Uniform yellowing across whole leaves with a steady drop of foliage of all ages, on a tree in heavy or poorly drained ground, is root suffocation. No spray helps. Raise the tree, improve drainage, and water less often but more deeply.
Yellowing between green veins on new leaves is a micronutrient problem, most often iron or manganese, and in alkaline or waterlogged soil it is a lock-out rather than an absence. Correcting the drainage and pH does more than adding more feed. Yellowing that begins on old leaves as an inverted V spreading from the midrib is magnesium.
Dark, oozing, sunken bark where the trunk meets the soil is collar rot, and it is almost always caused by soil or mulch piled against the trunk, a graft union buried by settling, or water pooling at the base. Pull everything back six inches (15 cm) from the bark, cut away rotted tissue to sound wood, and let the area dry. Caught early the tree recovers; ignored, it girdles and kills.
Fruit splitting at the button after rain is a watering pattern, not an infection. A tree that went dry and then received heavy rain swells its flesh faster than the loose rind can stretch. Even watering through fruit swell and a thicker mulch prevent it. A few splits in a wet autumn are normal and not worth acting on.
Finally, hard cold is the hazard specific to this species. A ponkan takes less frost than most mandarins, and damage shows as leaf drop, blackened young wood and fruit that goes dry and pulpy inside while looking sound outside. Do not prune frost-damaged wood until the following spring flush shows you clearly what is alive; cutting early nearly always removes wood that would have recovered.
Keep a note of what appeared and when
Record the date you first see each problem, which part of the tree it started on, and what you did. Pest arrival is tied to the flush and to the weather, so the dates repeat within a week or two from year to year, and after two seasons you know when to start looking instead of finding the damage after it is done.
Note the temperature on the coldest night each winter alongside any leaf drop or wood damage that followed. Over a few years that pairing tells you exactly how much cold your particular tree in your particular spot tolerates, which is far more useful than any published hardiness figure.
