This tree is chosen by heat, not by convenience
The ponkan is a large loose-skinned mandarin, and it behaves differently from the small easy-peel mandarins most gardeners meet first. It wants a long, genuinely warm season to build sugar, and it gives up ground at the cold end that a satsuma would hold. Where a settled satsuma shrugs off a brief dip into the low twenties Fahrenheit (around minus 5C), a ponkan starts losing leaves and young wood in the upper twenties Fahrenheit (around minus 2C), and a hard freeze on fruit still hanging ruins it outright.
That difference changes where the tree goes. A satsuma can take the ordinary open spot in the garden. A ponkan needs the warmest position you have: a sun-facing wall or the south side of a building, open ground below it so cold air keeps draining away downhill, and shelter from the prevailing wind. Cold air pools like water against solid fences, dense hedges and the bottom of a slope, and a tree standing in that pool runs three to five degrees Fahrenheit (2-3C) colder overnight than one on a slight rise twenty feet away. For a ponkan that gap is the difference between a full crop and a stripped tree.
The heat requirement matters just as much as the cold limit and gets far less attention. Sugar accumulates over a long warm autumn. In a short or cool season the fruit will color up and look finished while the juice stays sharp, and no amount of feeding fixes that. Eight hours of direct sun including the middle of the day, plus a wall or paving that stores heat and releases it after dark, is what closes the gap in a marginal climate.

Test the drainage before you dig the hole
More home citrus dies of wet roots than of cold, and the loss is slower and harder to read: a season of dull, slightly yellow leaves, then a sudden collapse. Dig a hole a foot (30 cm) deep and a foot across where you intend to plant, fill it with water, let it drain away completely, then fill it a second time. If the second filling has not gone within four hours, the site is too wet for a ponkan planted at grade.
The fix is height, not amendment. Digging a deeper hole and filling it with compost in heavy ground builds a sump that collects water from the surrounding soil and holds it against the roots. Instead, build up: a mound or raised bed eight to twelve inches (20-30 cm) above the surrounding grade and at least four feet (1.2 m) across, made from the native soil loosened and mixed with a modest amount of coarse organic matter. The tree sits on top of that, its roots in soil that drains sideways as well as down.
Ponkan does well in a large container in climates where winter forces it indoors, and the same rule applies there. Use a free-draining citrus mix rather than a peat-heavy potting mix, and never stand the pot in a saucer of water. A container tree gets watered by weight and by finger, not by schedule.
The graft union stays clear of the soil for life
Almost every ponkan you plant is grafted onto a rootstock chosen for vigor, disease tolerance and soil fit. The join, a visible kink or change of bark texture low on the trunk, must sit above soil level permanently. Buried, it lets the scion put out its own roots, which throws away the rootstock's benefits, and it holds moisture against bark that is not built to be wet, which invites collar rot.
Plant so the union sits at least four inches (10 cm) above the finished soil surface, and expect the whole plant to settle an inch or two as the soil beneath it consolidates. Setting it slightly high is a free insurance policy; setting it level means it will end up buried.
- Plant when the soil is warm Set the tree out once the soil has warmed through and hard frost is behind you, giving it a full warm season to root out before its first winter. Autumn planting in a marginal climate puts an unrooted tree straight into the season most likely to kill it.
- Dig wide and shallow Make the hole two to three times the width of the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. The undug base stops the tree sinking. Roughen the sides so roots are not turned back by a smooth wall.
- Loosen the outer roots Tease out any roots circling the outside of the root ball and cut through those that will not straighten. A circling root left alone thickens over the years and strangles the trunk it wraps.
- Backfill with native soil Return the soil you dug out rather than filling the hole with compost. A rich pocket in ordinary ground keeps roots inside it instead of driving them out into the surrounding soil where they need to be.
- Water in and mulch clear of the trunk Soak thoroughly to settle the soil against the roots, then mulch two to three inches (5-8 cm) deep across the root zone but pulled back six inches (15 cm) from the trunk. Mulch against bark rots it.
The first two years belong to the framework
A newly planted ponkan will try to flower and set fruit in its first spring. Strip the flowers off, and do the same in the second year if the tree has not put on real size. Every fruit carried is growth not made, and a ponkan that fruits before it has a framework stays small and cropped-out for years afterwards.
Water deeply and regularly through the first two warm seasons, roughly twice a week in hot weather and less as the tree settles, keeping the original root ball moist rather than only wetting the surrounding soil. New roots take a full season to move out of the ball, and until they do, rain landing on the wider bed does the tree very little good.
Do not feed at planting. Fertilizer dropped into the hole burns new roots and pushes soft top growth the root system cannot support. Wait until you see the first flush of new leaves, then start a light feeding program.
What to write down on planting day
Record the planting date, the exact position, the height of the graft union above the soil, and how long the drainage test took to clear. The graft height is the one you will want in three years, when settling and mulch have quietly buried it and you need to know how far it has moved.
Note which other citrus are growing within a few hundred feet, because that determines how seedy your fruit will be. Also mark the coldest spot in the garden and the temperature the tree actually saw on the worst night of its first winter. Two seasons of that record tell you whether the site is genuinely warm enough for a ponkan or whether you are relying on mild years.
