Overview

Burgess Buttercup is the original buttercup, which Burgess Seed and Plant Company released in 1932 and the source of the whole class's name. The round, flattened, turban-shaped fruit weighs 3 to 5 pounds and wears a dark forest-green rind with narrow paler stripes, plus the signature gray-green button on the blossom end. Inside is deep orange-yellow flesh that is very dry, dense and floury, with a rich sweetness many growers rank above butternut. Plants set three or four fruit and want a full season of 100 or more days, so sow after frost in hills, thin to two plants, and harvest before hard frost when the stem has dried. Cure about ten days in warmth; cured fruit keeps three to four months.
