Overview

Golden Delicious is an Oregon heirloom from the 1920s, a cross of Delicious and Boston Marrow, with top-shaped bright red-orange fruit and a hard, smooth rind. The light orange flesh is thick, fine-grained and dry, with good flavor and a higher vitamin C content than most squash; it was once favored for commercial baby food. Sow directly once soil is reliably above 65F, give the long vines space and steady moisture, and let the fruit ripen fully on the vine until a thumbnail cannot mark the rind. It is a dependable keeper into winter even without careful curing. Stokes lists it at about 90 days.
