Overview

Musquee de Provence, the Fairytale pumpkin of Provence in southern France, is a Cucurbita moschata with flattened, deeply ribbed fruit shaped like a wheel of cheese, 8 to 20 pounds. Green at first, the rind matures to terra cotta or a mottled terra cotta and green, deepening to russet-copper when fully ripe. The deep orange flesh is dense, sweet and aromatic with the slightly musky fragrance behind its name. It needs a long warm season, roughly 130 to 140 days from seed or 110 from transplant, and being a moschata it tolerates heat and humidity better than maxima types. Sow after frost in full sun and rich, well-drained soil, and set the big fruit on boards or straw to keep it off wet ground. Also sold as Muscade de Provence.
