Overview
Zeppelin is a modern open-pollinated delicata that organic seed growers developed as an improvement over older strains, with better disease tolerance and more uniform elongated fruit. The oblong ivory fruit weighs about a pound, carries green stripes and turns orange-yellow in storage. Like all delicatas the thin skin is edible and the dense flesh is sweet with a corn-and-chestnut character. Vines run further than bush delicatas, so give them space or a sturdy trellis. Sow into warm soil after frost, or start indoors three weeks early where seasons are short. Since it is a stable variety and not a hybrid, you can save seed from isolated plantings. About 100 days.
