Overview
Sparkler, an old American radish also called Scarlet Turnip White Tip, is the two-toned one: the round root is scarlet over its upper portion and clean white below, which makes it festive on a relish tray. Flesh is white, mild, and crisp, a touch gentler than solid red types, with medium tops. It matures in about 25 days and becomes hollow if left, so pull at three-quarters to one inch. Sow a quarter inch deep once the soil is workable, thin plants to 2 inches, and resow every two to three weeks; it bolts in summer heat, so keep to spring and fall.
