Yellowing foliage is the plant finishing, not failing
Flowering slows, the parsley-like leaves go from green to pale to yellow over two or three weeks, and the whole plant flattens and dries away. Every season some gardeners respond by watering harder, feeding, or digging the plants up assuming they have died. All three make things worse. This is the normal end of a ranunculus year, triggered by rising temperature, and the plant is deliberately shutting down and shipping everything it has back into the claws underground.
Those yellowing weeks are doing real work, and they decide next year's flowers. A corm that goes into dormancy fat will send up a strong rosette and many stems; a corm whose leaves were tidied away while still green will be small and flower thinly. So leave the foliage alone until it is properly yellow and pulls away with almost no resistance, however untidy the bed looks. Stop feeding as soon as flowering slows and stop watering as soon as the leaves start to pale.
Lift or leave: your summer and winter decide
A dormant ranunculus corm sitting in warm wet soil rots, and that single fact answers most of the question. Where summers are dry, or where the bed is sharply drained and will get no irrigation at all, corms can stay in the ground and come back the following season as a thickening clump. Where summers are wet and warm, or where the bed will be watered for the sake of whatever is planted after them, a good proportion simply will not return.
Cold decides the other end. Ranunculus are only reliably hardy in mild winters, roughly where the ground does not go much below 25F (-4C), and autumn-planted corms left in place in colder areas are killed outright by frost rather than by wet. In those regions lifting is not optional if you want the corms again.
If you are unsure about your own conditions, run the experiment rather than guessing. Lift half a block and leave half, label both clearly, and let the following season settle the argument for your particular garden. It is a one-year test that answers the question permanently.

Lifting and drying, step by step
Do this once the foliage has yellowed but before it has disappeared completely, because the dead leaves are your only marker for where the claws actually are. Pick a dry day and work when the soil crumbles rather than smears, which makes cleaning the corms far easier and does less damage to them.
- Fork out wide of the plant Push a fork in six to eight inches (15-20 cm) outside the crown and lever the whole section up rather than digging straight down into it. The claws spread wider than the rosette suggests and a fork through the middle of a corm ruins it.
- Separate clumps by hand Each original corm will usually have made two or three new ones joined at the crown. Pull them apart with your fingers along the natural join. Do not cut and do not force pieces that will not separate cleanly, because a torn crown is an open wound going into storage.
- Let the soil dry, then brush it off Leave them in the shade for an hour or two and rub the dry soil away with your fingers. Never wash ranunculus corms. Washing puts water back into tissue you are trying to dry down and is the commonest single cause of storage losses.
- Dry in a single layer for two to three weeks Spread them on trays or newspaper in a shaded, airy, frost-free place at 60-70F (16-21C), not in direct sun. They should shrivel back to the hard brown claws you originally bought. That papery, brittle state is the correct end point, not a sign of damage.
- Sort and throw out the doubtful ones Discard anything soft, moldy, bruised or with a blackened crown. One rotting corm in a bag will take several neighbors with it over months of storage, and no corm is worth that risk.
- Store dry, dark, cool and airy Paper bags, cardboard boxes or open trays with a little dry sand or vermiculite, somewhere around 50-60F (10-16C), dark and dry. Never sealed plastic, which traps moisture and rots the whole batch.
Sort the dried corms into large and small before you bag them. Planting graded corms in separate blocks next season gives an even display and a clean comparison of what each grade actually yields, instead of a patchy bed you cannot learn anything from.
Pots and beds through the dormant months
A potful is the simplest case of all. When the leaves yellow, move the pot somewhere sheltered from rain, stop watering completely, and leave it. The corms sit dry in their own dry compost until you either tip them out to sort them at the end of summer or simply start watering again when the cool season returns. A pot left standing in summer rain, by contrast, will be empty next year, and that is the entire difference between the two outcomes.
In open ground, if you are leaving corms in place, mark the block clearly before the foliage vanishes and resist planting anything thirsty on top of them. Summer bedding watered all season above dormant ranunculus claws is a reliable way to lose them without ever finding out why. A dry mulch of grit or gravel over the block helps in areas with occasional summer rain by shedding water away from the crowns.
What to record before you forget
Write down the date you lifted, how many corms you planted, and how many sound corms you got back. That ratio is the most honest verdict on a position there is. A block that goes in at thirty and comes out at fifty liked where it was; one that comes out at fifteen is telling you plainly that the ground stayed too wet, and next year those corms belong somewhere better drained or in a container.
Note the storage conditions too: where in the house or shed the bag went, and roughly how warm and dry that place is. Storage losses are common and almost always trace back to somewhere too warm, too damp or too airtight, and you will only spot the pattern across seasons if you recorded where they sat last time.
