Grubs in the fruit
Finding a small pale grub inside a picked raspberry, or a berry that is dried and brown at the stalk end, means raspberry beetle. The adult is a small dull brown beetle that arrives around flowering, lays eggs in the open flowers, and the larva feeds inside the developing berry. By the time you find the grub the damage is done for that fruit.
Control is about timing and about the ground under the canes. The larvae drop into the soil to pupate and emerge from there the following spring, so cultivating lightly under the row in late winter exposes them, and hanging a trap during flowering catches adults before they lay. Autumn-fruiting varieties are far less affected simply because they flower after the beetle's main egg-laying period, which is one of the strongest practical arguments for growing them.
Picking frequently helps more than it sounds. Infested berries left on the cane complete the cycle; picked and removed, they do not.

The cane diseases, and how to tell them apart
Three fungal diseases attack raspberry canes and they look similar at a glance, but they behave differently and it is worth learning which is which because the response differs. All three are far worse in a crowded, humid row, which is why thinning is the primary control.
Cane blight is the most serious. It enters through a wound near the base, the cane darkens and becomes brittle, and it dies suddenly, often with fruit on it in midsummer. Spur blight shows as purple blotches around the buds, spreading up from the leaf joints, and the buds simply fail the next spring. Cane spot produces small purple spots that turn into gray pits with a purple rim, and badly spotted canes split.
There is no cure for any of them on an infected cane. The response is to cut the cane out at ground level, take it out of the garden and burn or bin it rather than compost it, then reduce the humidity in the row by thinning harder next season.

Always cut a diseased cane out at ground level rather than shortening it. The base is where cane blight lives, and a stub keeps the infection in the bed over winter.
Trouble in the roots
When whole plants wilt and die rather than individual canes, look below ground. Two problems account for most losses, and both are decided by where you planted rather than by anything you can spray.
Phytophthora root rot is a wet-soil disease. Canes are stunted, the leaves go yellow then scorch at the edges, and plants collapse in early summer; scraping the bark at the base shows a brown-red stain where it should be white. It follows waterlogging, and the only real answer is drainage: raise the row into a ridge 8 inches (20 cm) high, or move the bed to better ground.
Verticillium wilt shows as leaves yellowing and dropping from the bottom of the cane upward, often on one side of the plant only. It comes from soil where potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines or strawberries have grown, and it persists in the soil for years. It cannot be treated; replant elsewhere and keep raspberries out of that ground.

Sap suckers and the virus problem
Aphids on the shoot tips and undersides of young leaves matter less for what they eat than for what they carry. Raspberry viruses are spread by aphids and by soil-dwelling nematodes, and a virus-infected plant cannot be cured. Symptoms are yellow mottling or vein-clearing on the leaves, stunted canes, crumbly fruit that falls apart into segments, and a general decline in yield over two or three years.
The practical approach is to keep aphid numbers down early in the season, when the shoot tips are soft, and to accept that a declining old bed is often a virus problem. Raspberry beds are worth replanting with fresh certified stock in new ground roughly every eight to ten years, and continual crumbly fruit across the whole row is the signal to plan that.
Two-spotted spider mite appears in hot dry spells as fine pale speckling on the upper leaf surface and fine webbing underneath. It thrives in dry, dusty, sheltered conditions, so keeping the soil evenly moist and the row airy is most of the control.
- Check the shoot tips weekly in spring Turn over the youngest leaves on a few canes. Colonies start on the softest growth and are easy to squash or wash off before they build.
- Do not feed hard with nitrogen Soft, sappy growth from heavy nitrogen is exactly what aphids want, and it also makes canes more susceptible to the cane diseases. Feed modestly in late winter and rely on mulch.
- Watch for crumbly fruit across the whole row One crumbly berry is a pollination issue. Every berry on every plant crumbling, year after year, points at virus, and the answer is new stock in new ground.
- Never propagate from a declining bed Suckers lifted from a virus-infected plant carry the virus with them. If you want more canes, buy certified stock rather than moving suckers.
The three habits that prevent most of it
Almost every problem on this page is worse in a dense row and better in an open one. Rather than a spray calendar, raspberry health comes down to a small number of repeated physical jobs, and they are the same jobs that make the fruit better.
Note the date and the location whenever you cut out a diseased cane, and note what you thought it was. Cane blight recurring in the same three feet of row two years running tells you something about drainage or about a wound source at that spot, and that pattern is invisible unless it is written down.

Disinfect pruners between rows and after cutting out anything diseased. Cane blight in particular travels on tools, and a single infected cut can seed a healthy row.
