Birds will take the whole crop, and quickly
Every other problem on this page is a matter of degree. Birds are the one that ends the season. Sparrows, finches and starlings find ripening rice with uncanny speed, and because a home tub holds a tiny quantity in one obvious place, a flock can strip it in two or three mornings. The heads look intact from a distance because the empty husks stay on the stem; you notice only when you squeeze one and there is nothing inside.
The window runs from the moment the grain leaves the milky stage and starts to color, through to the day you cut, which is roughly three to four weeks. Net before that window opens, not when you see the first bird. By the time birds are visibly working the tub they have already told every other bird in the neighborhood.
Use fine mesh netting held clear of the heads on canes or a simple frame. Netting laid directly on the crop does not work: birds stand on it and feed through it, and the heads snag and tear when you lift it. Tuck the edges under the rim of the tub or weight them on the ground so nothing can walk in underneath. Reflective tape and scarecrows buy you a few days at best and then stop working entirely.
Check under the net every couple of days. A bird that gets in and cannot find its way out will panic, damage the heads and die there. A frame that is easy for you to lift is also easy to check.
Insects on the stems and leaves
The insects that reach a home rice tub are mostly sap feeders, and they concentrate low down where the stems meet the water. Part the clump and look at the base rather than the leaf tips; damage shows there first. A tub that was fed hard early, with soft dark foliage, attracts far more of them than a lean one, so the feeding restraint described in the care guide is also pest control.
Treatment at this scale is mechanical before it is chemical. A strong jet of water into the base of the clumps knocks sap feeders off and most do not climb back. Squashing by hand works on the larger caterpillars. Insecticides are rarely justified on a tub you are growing for the experience, and anything sprayed over standing water goes straight into a small closed body of water full of other life.

The water itself: algae, mosquitoes and sour mud
A tub of warm standing water in full sun grows algae. A thin green film is harmless and shades the mud, but a thick mat that lifts on the surface will drag young transplants up with it and, when it dies, will rot and foul the water. Skim heavy mats off by hand. Algae blooms follow fertilizer dissolved in the water, so put feed onto the mud, not into the water, and start lean.
Standing water also breeds mosquitoes, and a rice tub is a textbook breeding site. This is the single most common objection from neighbors and it is a fair one. The clean answer is not to drain the tub but to give the larvae a predator: a few small fish in a large tub eat larvae continuously and cause the rice no trouble at all. If fish are not practical, the midsummer dry-down interrupts the breeding cycle, and mosquito larvae also struggle where the surface is disturbed, so a small solar fountain helps. Never let the tub sit as still, stagnant, unstocked water for weeks in high summer.
Mud that has been flooded and undisturbed for a long time turns anaerobic, which you detect by smell: stir it and you get a rotten-egg note. Roots in sour mud go black and the newest leaves yellow. This is exactly what the midsummer drain fixes, and it is one of the reasons the drain is part of the routine rather than an emergency measure.
Lodging, disease and knowing when to stop worrying
Lodging is the whole tub going flat in a storm, usually in late summer when the heads are heavy. Flattened rice does not die but ripens badly, sits in the wet and molds, and is miserable to harvest. It is nearly always caused by too much nitrogen early, clumps planted too close, or skipping the dry-down that firms the root plate. If it happens, prop the mass up with canes and string around the outside of the tub and get air under it. Then fix the cause next year rather than the symptom this year.
Fungal leaf disease shows as spots on the leaves, often diamond-shaped with pale centers and darker edges, and in bad cases at the neck of the head, which then goes white and empty. It is driven by prolonged humid weather, crowding and soft growth. Space the clumps properly, keep air moving, feed lightly, and remove badly spotted leaves. At tub scale it is rarely worth spraying.
Note which problems actually appeared and when: the date you netted, the date birds first showed interest, whether the tub lodged and after which storm, and where in the tub the trouble started. Rice problems are strongly seasonal and strongly positional, and a couple of years of notes will show you that the same corner goes first every time, usually the one with the least air movement or the most afternoon heat.
