Plan for the size it becomes, not the size it is
The plant in the pot is a fraction of the plant you are actually siting. Left alone, rose of Sharon makes an upright, vase-shaped shrub eight to twelve feet (2.5 to 3.5 m) tall and six to ten feet (2 to 3 m) across, with a heavy, stiff branch structure. It can be held smaller by annual pruning, and it can be trained up as a small multi-stemmed tree, but the roots and the vigor are sized for the full plant either way.
Give it the room in the table below and you will never have to fight it. Crowd it and you get a shrub that leans out of the group, flowers only on the sunlit face, and needs cutting back every year to keep a path usable.

Full sun, and what happens without it
This shrub needs at least six hours of direct sun a day, and eight is better. Because it flowers only on the growth it makes in the current season, shade does not just dim the display; it reduces the amount of new wood the plant produces, so there are fewer places for flowers to be. A plant in half a day of sun typically makes long, thin, reaching shoots with widely spaced buds and flowers only at the top.
It is not fussy about heat and it stands up to hot, humid summers and to reflected heat off a wall or a drive better than most flowering shrubs. Wind is a mild concern only: the branch structure is stiff and brittle, and a heavily flowered shrub in an exposed spot can lose a limb in a summer storm. A site with some shelter from the prevailing wind keeps the shape intact.
Cold is rarely the deciding factor. Rose of Sharon is a genuinely hardy hibiscus and stands winter lows around minus twenty Fahrenheit (minus 29 C) without protection once established. What it will not do is break dormancy early, and that is a feature of the plant rather than a symptom of the site.
Soil, and the day you put it in
Any reasonable garden soil suits it. It prefers a slightly acid to neutral pH, tolerates clay far better than most shrubs, and flowers perfectly well on thin, poor ground. The only real requirement is that the site does not sit under standing water in winter; permanently waterlogged soil rots the roots. If the ground stays wet for days after rain, plant on a low mound six inches (15 cm) proud of the surrounding level rather than trying to improve the drainage of a hole.
Resist the urge to enrich the planting hole heavily. Backfilling with rich compost in a clay soil creates a container effect, where roots circle in the soft pocket rather than pushing out into the surrounding ground, and it encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Backfill with the soil that came out.
Bare-root or dormant plants go in while the plant is leafless. Container-grown plants can go in through the growing season, though planting in the heat of high summer means committing to regular watering for the rest of that year.
- Dig wide, not deep Make the hole two to three times the width of the root ball and exactly as deep as the root ball is tall. Loosening the soil below the root ball only lets the plant settle, which buries the crown.
- Open up a pot-bound root ball If roots are circling the outside of the ball, tease them loose with your fingers or make three or four shallow vertical cuts down the sides with a knife. Circling roots left intact stay circling, and the plant never anchors properly.
- Set it at the same depth it grew The top of the root ball should sit level with the surrounding soil or a fraction proud of it. Planting deep is the most common cause of a shrub that never gets going. Lay a cane across the hole to check the level before you backfill.
- Backfill and water in, not down Firm the soil in with your hands in layers rather than treading it hard, then water slowly with several gallons to settle it and collapse any air pockets. Top up any depression with more soil afterwards.
- Mulch, keeping the trunk clear Spread two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) of bark or compost over the whole root zone, out to the width of the branches, and pull it back to leave a clear ring two inches (5 cm) around the stems. Mulch piled against the bark keeps it wet and invites rot.
Do not prune a newly planted shrub into shape. Remove only broken or dead wood and let it grow away for a full season; structural pruning belongs in its first late winter, once you can see what the plant has actually made.
The first two seasons, and what to record
Until the root system spreads well beyond the original ball, the plant is not the drought-tolerant shrub the label promised. Water it deeply once a week through its first two summers, soaking slowly rather than sprinkling, and skip a week after heavy rain. From the third season onward it should need water only in a genuine drought.
Expect a modest first year. Many plants flower a little in their first season and properly from the second, and the shrub will look sparse and awkward before the branch structure fills out. Do not respond to a slow start by feeding heavily; that gives you leaves rather than flowers.
On planting day, write down the date, the exact position relative to two fixed points such as a corner of the house and a fence post, the size of the plant going in, and which way the site faces. The position note is worth more than it sounds. This shrub leafs out so late that a young plant is invisible in spring, and a marker or a written measurement is the difference between it surviving your spring digging and not. In each of the following springs, add the date you first saw green, and after two or three years you will have a reliable local answer to the question of whether the plant is dead.
