Saltwort Problems: Empty Rows, Aphids, Rot and Wiry Prickly Stems

Most trouble with this crop is not a pest. It is old seed that never germinated, a wet crown, or a plant that has flowered and gone wiry. Here is how to tell them apart.

The pattern of trouble with this crop

Saltwort is not a plant with a long list of enemies. It is tough, it shrugs off salt and wind, and once it is up and growing it is largely trouble free. Almost everything that goes wrong falls into three groups: seed that never came up, a crown or base kept too wet, and the natural end of the crop when the plant runs to flower and the stems harden.

Reading which of the three you have is straightforward if you look at the timing. A problem in the first fortnight, before there are any plants to speak of, is a seed or seedbed problem. A problem in mid-season on growing plants is water, drainage or a soft-growth pest. A problem that arrives suddenly at the end of a good picking run is the plant flowering, and that is not a problem at all but the crop finishing on schedule.

The table below covers what actually turns up. Work down it rather than reaching for a spray, because two of the three common failures are cultural and a spray does nothing about either.

The empty row, and why it is almost always the seed

By far the most common complaint about this crop is that it never came up. Before considering anything else, check the age of the seed. Saltwort seed loses viability within about a year and is close to dead by two. A packet kept from a previous season, especially one stored somewhere warm, will give you a handful of seedlings from a full row and nothing you did in the bed made any difference.

The second cause is depth. The seed is small and has very little reserve. Sown an inch (2.5 cm) down it germinates and exhausts itself before it reaches the light. A quarter to a half inch (5 to 10 mm) is the whole range, and on heavy soil that caps after rain a covering of sieved compost or sharp sand gives the seedlings a surface they can actually push through.

The third is the seedbed drying out. Between sowing and emergence the surface must stay damp. Two hot windy days can dry the top half inch completely, and seed that has taken up water and then dried is dead seed. If a row fails, do not simply resow from the same packet and hope: test twenty seeds on damp kitchen paper in a warm room, and if fewer than five sprout in ten days, the packet is the problem and no change in technique will fix it.

  1. Check the date on the packet first Seed from this season is fine. Seed from last season is marginal. Seed older than that should be assumed dead until a paper test proves otherwise.
  2. Test on damp paper before resowing Twenty seeds on damp kitchen paper in a closed box at about 68F (20C). Count sprouts at ten days. Under five out of twenty means buy new seed.
  3. Sow shallower than feels right A quarter to a half inch (5 to 10 mm), no deeper. Cover with sieved compost or sharp sand on soil that sets hard after rain.
  4. Keep the surface damp until green shows A daily fine spray in dry weather, or row cover laid flat on the bed and lifted the day seedlings appear. Seed that wets and then dries out will not recover.
  5. Wait for warm soil Above 59F (15C). Sowing into cold ground gives slow, patchy germination and seed that rots in place rather than waiting for better weather.

Buy saltwort seed fresh each season and sow the whole packet. It is not a crop where saving half the seed for next year makes sense, because half of it will be worthless by then.

Pests on soft growth, and rot at the base

The pests that turn up are the ones that follow soft, sappy growth. Aphids colonise the tender shoot tips, which is exactly the part you want to eat, and they arrive in numbers on plants that have been fed heavily. A strong jet of water knocks them off, cutting the worst tips removes them entirely, and easing back on nitrogen stops the cycle. Do not spray a crop you are cutting weekly if you can solve it by cutting instead.

Flea beetles peck small round holes in young leaves and can check seedlings badly in a dry spring, though they largely ignore established plants. A layer of row cover over the row from sowing until the plants are three or four inches (8 to 10 cm) tall solves it completely. Slugs will take seedlings on damp ground but rarely bother the plants once they are up and the soil surface is dry and gritty.

The one thing that actually kills established plants is rot at the base. Dark, soft patches on the lower stem, followed by a plant that wilts on a sunny day despite wet soil, means the crown has been sitting wet. This is a drainage problem, not a disease to be treated. Raise the bed, work grit into heavy ground, mulch with coarse sand, and water in the morning at the base. Air movement matters too: crowded plants left unthinned hold damp around their bases and are the ones that go first, so thinning to three or four inches (8 to 10 cm) is as much a disease measure as a spacing one.

When the crop is simply over, and what to record

At some point every plant flowers, and that is the real end of the crop rather than any pest. Small green flowers appear in the leaf axils, the stems stiffen into wire, and the leaf tips harden into short spines that prick your fingers when you reach in to cut. Shoots taken after that are tough and unpleasant and no watering, feeding or cutting back will soften them again.

People often read this as a disease because it appears suddenly, within a week, on plants that were cropping perfectly. It is not. It is the plant completing its annual cycle, and it happens faster when the plants have been short of water, crowded, or left uncut for a few weeks. Good care delays it by a week or two; nothing prevents it.

Pull the finished plants promptly. Standing wiry plants shed seed across the bed, harbor aphids that then move onto the next succession, and take up ground that could carry the following sowing. Compost them, though be aware they are prickly to handle at that stage.

Two records are worth keeping. First, the week flower buds appeared in each row, because that number sets how far apart your sowings should be next season. Second, the position of any row that failed to germinate and the age of the seed you used, because that tells you which seed source to trust and which to abandon.

  1. Tell flowering from disease Flowering is uniform across the row, the plants stay green, and the stems stiffen. Disease is patchy, plants wilt or discolor, and neighboring plants stay soft.
  2. Delay it, do not fight it Steady water, cutting every seven to ten days and pinching the first buds buys a week or two. Beyond that, the row is finished on its own timetable.
  3. Clear finished plants promptly Pull them before the seed sheds. Old wiry plants act as an aphid reservoir for the younger successions growing beside them.
  4. Sow the replacement immediately If eight warm weeks remain, the cleared ground will carry another full picking. Fresh seed only, sown shallow into the warm soil that is already there.
  5. Record the flowering week and any failed rows Note when buds appeared in each row and, for any row that never came up, the age of the seed. Those two notes prevent most repeat problems next season.
