Sooty black leaves mean scale, not disease
A sasanqua whose leaves are coated in a black, dusty film that rubs off has sooty mold, and sooty mold is a symptom rather than a disease. It grows on honeydew, the sugary excretion of sap-sucking insects, so the black film tells you there is an infestation above it. Turn over the leaves directly beneath the worst of the black and you will find the culprit.
Scale insects are the usual cause on camellias. They look like small flat brown or white blisters clamped to the undersides of leaves along the midrib, and they do not move, which is why people mistake them for a physical mark on the leaf. Scrape one with a fingernail and it lifts off, revealing a soft body underneath. A heavy infestation weakens the plant and thins the following autumn's flowering.
Treat by targeting the crawler stage, the brief period in early summer when the young are mobile and unprotected. Once they have settled and formed their shell, most sprays cannot reach them. On a small plant, wiping the undersides of leaves with a cloth and soapy water is genuinely effective. On a hedge, an application of horticultural oil timed to the crawler stage smothers them. Improving air movement by thinning the plant reduces recurrence more than any spray.

Dull bronzed foliage is usually mites
Leaves that lose their gloss and take on a bronze or silvery cast, particularly on the older growth in a hot dry summer, are showing mite damage. The mites themselves are barely visible without a hand lens, and by the time the discoloration is obvious the population is already high. Look on the undersides, where the damage will be worst near the midrib.
Mites thrive in hot, dry, still conditions, so the plant most likely to suffer is one against a warm wall with dry soil and no air movement. That is also, unhelpfully, the position sasanquas often get given. Keeping the root zone properly moist and mulched removes most of the pressure, and a forceful spray of water over the foliage in the evening during a hot spell knocks numbers down considerably.
Damaged leaves do not recover their color. Judge whether treatment is working by looking at the new growth that follows, not by waiting for the bronzed leaves to green up.
Yellow leaves: pH first, everything else second
The classic sasanqua yellowing is chlorosis, where the leaf blade goes pale yellow while the veins stay distinctly green, and it shows worst on the newest growth. That pattern is specific and it means iron, which means pH. On soil above about 6.5, iron is present but chemically locked up, and the plant cannot take it in.
The permanent fix is to lower the pH around the roots, which means acid mulches such as pine needles or composted bark, sulfur applied according to a soil test, and rainwater rather than hard tap water. A chelated iron feed greens the plant up within a few weeks but is a symptom treatment that has to be repeated indefinitely. Use it to buy time while the mulch does the real work.
Uniform yellowing with no green veins, particularly on older leaves, is a different problem: usually waterlogging, root damage or a pot-bound container. Check the drainage before assuming a nutrient issue, and never feed a plant that is yellowing from wet roots.
One yellow leaf in autumn is not a problem. Camellias shed a proportion of their oldest leaves each year, and those leaves go uniformly yellow and drop from deep inside the plant. If the yellowing is on the newest growth at the outside of the shrub, that is worth investigating. If it is on old interior leaves, it is normal.
Flower problems and the autumn advantage
Sasanquas escape the worst flower problem that afflicts spring camellias. Because they flower in autumn and early winter, their open flowers are rarely caught by hard frost, so you do not get the brown-edged, ruined blooms that spoil a spring camellia in a cold snap. The petals also shatter one at a time as they age, so spent flowers fall as small pieces rather than as whole soggy blooms that sit on the ground.
Petal blight can still occur in a long wet autumn, showing as brown spots that spread rapidly across the petals until the flower turns to slime while still attached. It overwinters in fallen debris, so the useful response is sanitation: rake up and bin fallen petals, do not compost them, and keep the mulch layer refreshed. Thinning the shrub to move air through it helps too.
Buds that swell and drop without opening are not a disease at all. They are the delayed result of the plant running short of water during bud set the previous summer. Nothing applied in autumn will save them, and the response is a watering plan for next year rather than a spray this year.
What to log when something goes wrong
When you first notice a problem, note the date, which part of the plant it appeared on, and whether it was new or old growth. Those three details separate most of the causes above from one another, and they are exactly the details nobody remembers a month later when the problem has spread.
For pests, record the date you first saw crawlers or damage. Scale in particular has a narrow treatable window each year, and knowing from your own notes that the crawlers appeared in the second week of warm weather last year lets you treat at the right moment next year instead of guessing. Note the weather in the weeks beforehand as well, since hot dry spells and mite outbreaks track each other closely.
