Lace bug: pale stippling above, black specks below
Azalea lace bug is the commonest serious pest on satsuki, and it is worse on plants in strong sun than on plants in shade. The adults are small, flat and clear-winged, and they feed on the underside of the leaf, draining cells one at a time. From above the leaf takes on a fine pale speckling that spreads until the whole blade looks silvery gray and washed out. That damage never repairs, so a badly hit leaf stays ugly until it falls.
Turn a leaf over and the diagnosis is immediate. You will find shiny black tar-like specks of excrement stuck to the underside, along with the insects themselves and their darker spiny young. Nothing else on a satsuki leaves those black specks, which is why checking the underside is the single most useful five seconds in the whole pest year.
There are usually two or three generations in a season, so early detection matters far more than the strength of whatever you spray. Start checking the undersides of leaves as the weather warms, before flowering, and keep checking every couple of weeks through the summer. Catching the first generation on a handful of leaves is a two-minute job; catching the third generation across the whole plant is not.
- Inspect the undersides fortnightly Turn over a few leaves from the sunniest side of the plant, which is where the first generation always appears. Look for black specks first and insects second.
- Wash off a light infestation A strong jet of water aimed upwards at the leaf undersides dislodges nymphs before they mature. Repeat every few days for a fortnight while the first generation is hatching.
- Treat with a contact spray if it spreads Insecticidal soap or horticultural oil works, but only where it lands. Spray upwards to wet the undersides thoroughly and repeat after ten days to catch newly hatched nymphs.
- Avoid spraying open flowers Satsuki flower in warm weather when beneficial insects are active. Treat before flowering or after the last bloom drops, never over open blooms in the heat of the day.
- Move the plant into afternoon shade Lace bug populations build far faster on hot, dry, sun-baked plants. Relocating a container to morning-sun-only exposure often halves the problem without any spray at all.
Telling the leaf problems apart
Most leaf complaints on satsuki reduce to five causes, and they are distinguishable by pattern rather than by color. Look at which leaves are affected, whether the veins stay green, and what is on the underside. Getting this right saves you from spraying a plant whose real problem is the soil.
Work through the table below with the plant in front of you and a hand lens if you have one. The commonest mistake is treating a scorched plant for pests: scorch appears on the exposed side, follows the sun, and shows dry brown tissue between green veins, while pest damage shows fine even speckling across the whole leaf face and evidence underneath.

Petal blight: the problem a late flowerer meets
Because satsuki open in warm, often humid weather rather than in cool spring air, they are more exposed to petal blight than earlier azaleas are. The fungus attacks the open flower only. Small watery spots appear on the petals, spread within a day or two, and the whole bloom collapses into a slimy brown mass that clings to the plant instead of dropping cleanly. A display can go from perfect to ruined in under a week of warm wet weather.
You cannot cure an infected flower, so the whole management is about removing the source and reducing wetness. The fungus overwinters in small hard bodies in the litter under the plant, which is why a bush that had it one year usually has it worse the next if the fallen petals were left in place. Clearing that litter completely is the most effective thing you will do.
Water at the base rather than over the canopy while the plant is in flower, and give it air movement. Plants crammed against a wall or wedged between other shrubs hold humidity in the canopy for hours after rain, and that is exactly the condition the fungus needs. Spacing containers apart for the flowering weeks is a genuine control measure.
Pick off collapsed blooms as you see them and bag them rather than composting them. Leaving mushy petals on the plant or on the soil beneath is how the infection carries into next year's flowering.
Root rot and vine weevil: the two that actually kill
Everything above spoils a satsuki. These two end it. Root rot arrives when the fine root mat sits in stagnant water, usually because the mix has broken down into sludge, the pot drains poorly, or the plant was set too deep. The plant wilts even though the soil is wet, the leaves go dull and hang, and the collapse is often sudden. Knock it out of the pot and the roots are dark, soft and pull away from the plant instead of resisting.
Vine weevil is the quieter killer. The adults notch the leaf edges at night, which is unsightly but harmless. The white legless grubs in the medium eat the roots through autumn and winter, and the first sign above ground is often a plant that simply falls over or lifts out of its pot with no root system left. Container satsuki are the usual victims because the grubs are perfectly at home in a pot.

Keeping a written pest record
Note the date you first find lace bug specks each year, and the date petal blight first shows in the flowers. Both events are tied to weather rather than to the calendar, but they repeat within a week or two of the same point in the plant's own cycle, measured from when flowering starts. After two seasons of notes you will be inspecting a fortnight ahead of the problem instead of reacting to it.
Record which plants and which positions were hit. Lace bug consistently punishes the sunniest, driest spot in a collection, and if the same container in the same corner is infested every year, the answer is to move the container rather than to spray it harder each season.
