Shiranui Care Through the Year: Water, Feeding and Holding a Heavy Crop

This tree is low on vigor and high on demand. Steady water through fruit swell, nitrogen timed to the flushes, and honest early thinning are what keep a shiranui cropping every year instead of every other year.

Water by the soil, and never let it swing

The working roots of a shiranui sit in the top eighteen inches (45 cm) of soil and spread well beyond the edge of the canopy. That is where you water and that is where you test. Push a finger or a probe four inches (10 cm) down under the mulch at the canopy edge. Dry there means water now. Still damp means leave it.

When you water, water deeply enough to bring the whole root zone to field capacity, then let it dry back part way before the next soak. In hot dry weather an established tree in the ground usually wants a thorough soak every seven to ten days; a container tree can need one every day or two, because the volume of mix it lives in buffers nothing. Cut back sharply in cool weather, when the tree is barely transpiring and saturated soil turns sour.

Swings matter more with this variety than with most citrus, because the fruit is so large. A dry spell followed by heavy watering during fruit swell splits rinds and drops fruit, and because a shiranui rind is thick and loose it splits along the shoulders where it is already under strain. Steady moisture from petal fall through late summer is worth more than any feed you can apply.

Feed the flushes, not the calendar

Citrus grows in flushes, distinct pushes of new shoots separated by weeks of apparent stillness. Nitrogen applied just before a flush is used; nitrogen applied into a resting tree leaches away or sits in the soil and pushes soft, aphid-prone growth at the wrong moment. Split the annual nitrogen into three, and time the applications to the start of spring growth, to early summer as fruit begins to swell, and to a smaller top-up in late summer.

Stop nitrogen well before cold weather. Shiranui makes thin wood, and a late soft flush going into winter is the tissue that dies first and lets dieback into the branch behind it. On a weak-growing tree, that loss is expensive because it is slow to be replaced.

Yellowing leaves are not automatically a nitrogen shortage. Uniform pale green over the whole tree usually is. A yellow leaf with a green net of veins is normally iron or manganese, common where soil is alkaline or waterlogged, and a foliar feed of chelated micronutrients corrects it far faster than anything applied to the roots. Yellow blotches on older leaves alone, with the newest growth still green, point to magnesium.

Thin the crop or accept a crop every other year

Shiranui alternates harder than almost any mandarin you will grow. A heavy year exhausts the tree so completely that it sets few or no flower buds for the following season, and you get a bare year, then another glut. Left alone the tree locks into that rhythm and stays in it. The way out is thinning, and it has to be done early and it has to be severe enough to feel wrong.

Wait until the natural early summer drop has finished, when the tree has shed what it could never carry. Then thin what remains down to roughly one fruit for every forty to sixty healthy leaves, which on a young tree can mean removing more than half of what is hanging. Take off the misshapen, the wind-scarred, the ones touching a branch and the ones bunched in clusters, and leave singles spaced out along the wood.

The reward is immediate as well as long term. Thinned fruit sizes better and sweetens more reliably, the branches are not levered down and split, and the tree keeps enough reserves to set flower buds for next year. A shiranui thinned every year yields far more over five years than one allowed to boom and bust.

Count the fruit you leave on one representative branch and write the number down. Next summer you will have no memory of how heavy the crop looked, but you will have the count, and that is what tells you whether last year's thinning was hard enough.

Support the branches before the wind does the deciding

By late summer the fruit is heavy enough to bend scaffolds noticeably, and the bend does not fully recover. On any limb hanging below the horizontal, prop it with a forked stake under the branch or tie it up to a stronger limb above using soft wide tape that will not cut into bark. Check the ties every few weeks because the wood thickens fast at this stage.

Keep the tree out of the wind as far as you can. A temporary windbreak screen on the exposed side, even a length of mesh fixed to two posts, does more for a young shiranui than any spray. Wind scars the thick rind into corky brown patches, shreds the new flush, and levers fruit-laden branches until they split at the crotch.

The record that makes next year easier

Keep a simple log: the date each flush started, the dates you fed, the date the natural drop finished, the number of fruit left on your marked branch after thinning, and the date of color break. Six entries a year is enough, and it is the difference between guessing and knowing.

The most useful pair to have is the thinning count set against the following spring's bloom. Once you can see that a heavy year was followed by a thin bloom, and a hard-thinned year was followed by a full one, you stop arguing with yourself about whether the thinning is really necessary and simply do it.
