Why pouring water on top does not work
A staghorn fern is an epiphyte. In the wild it sits on the side of a tree with its roots wrapped in a pad of old shield fronds and trapped leaf litter, and it drinks when that whole pad gets wet in rain. Nothing about it is built to take a cup of water poured onto the surface.
If your plant is mounted on a board or sitting in a wire basket, water poured on top runs straight down the outside of the moss and out. The face of the moss goes dark, you think you have watered it, and the middle of the ball where the roots actually are stays bone dry. Plants die this way for months without anyone noticing, because the antler fronds hold their shape for a long time after the roots have gone.
The fix is a soak. You put the whole mount, moss and all, into water and leave it there until the ball has taken up as much as it will hold. Then you let it drain properly and hang it back up. That is the entire method, and it is worth doing right because everything else about this plant is easy.
A soaked mount is heavy and a dry mount is light, and the difference is dramatic. Pick yours up straight after a soak and again a week later. Once you know those two weights in your hands you will never need a moisture meter.
How to soak a mounted plant
Use a sink, a bucket or a shallow tub, whatever the mount fits into. Water at room temperature, never cold from the tap in winter. The plant can go in face down, face up or on its side, whichever gets the moss under the surface without bending the antler fronds.
- Fill deep enough to cover the moss You want the water level above the back of the mount so the moss pad is submerged. The board itself getting wet does no harm. If the mount floats, rest something on the board to hold it down.
- Leave it for ten to twenty minutes Dry sphagnum resists water at first and then suddenly takes it up. Ten minutes is enough for a mount that was watered last week. A mount that has gone completely dry and light needs twenty minutes or more, and it may need a second soak the next day.
- Watch the bubbles stop Air comes out of the moss in a steady stream of small bubbles while it is filling. When the bubbling has essentially stopped, the ball is as wet as it is going to get. This is a better signal than any clock.
- Drain it before it goes back up Lift it out and let it drip for fifteen or twenty minutes, board down, until it stops running. Hanging a streaming wet mount back on a wall soaks the wall and leaves the back of the board permanently damp, which is where rot starts.
- Shake water out of the crown Tip the mount so that water sitting in the cup where the antler fronds emerge runs out. Water left standing in that crown through a cool night is the one reliable way to rot the growing point.
How often, by season and by weight
Interval depends far more on your room and your mount than on the plant. A small mount in a warm dry room may want water twice a week. A large ball in a cool room can go a fortnight. Use the table as a starting point and correct it by weight within two or three cycles.
The one rule that holds everywhere is that the mount should get properly light between soaks. A ball that is never allowed to dry down stays sour, and the roots inside it die quietly.

Reading the plant instead of the calendar
The antler fronds tell you when you have gone too long. Thirst shows as a soft droop and a slight curl at the edges, and a soaked plant recovers from that within a day. If a drooping plant has not lifted twenty four hours after a full soak, the problem is at the roots and not in the watering can.
Overwatering looks different and is far more dangerous. The base of the antler fronds goes dark and slightly translucent, then soft, and the whole frond eventually pulls away with almost no resistance. A blackening base is not thirst and must never be answered with more water.

Keep a note of the date you soak it and how heavy it felt beforehand. Two months of those notes tells you your own interval for summer and for winter, which is more useful than any general figure.
Water quality and misting
Tap water is fine for almost everyone. Very hard water leaves a white crust on the moss and on the felt of the fronds over a few years, and if you see that building up, use collected rainwater for every third or fourth soak to flush it through.
Misting is not watering. A fine spray wets the surface of the fronds and evaporates within the hour, and it does nothing at all for the root ball. It is worth doing on hot dry days as a supplement, aimed at the air around the plant rather than at the crown, but a plant that is only ever misted is a plant that is slowly dying of thirst.
