Tankan Problems and Pests: Frost on Hanging Fruit, Splitting and Sour Crops

The biggest hazard to a tankan is not an insect but the calendar: fruit hangs through the cold season. Frost, splitting and a sour crop cause more losses than every pest combined.

The main hazard is the winter hang

Most citrus troubleshooting guides start with insects. For a tankan that is the wrong order. This fruit ripens in late winter, which means the crop sits on the tree through the coldest weeks of the year, and cold takes more tankan crops than every pest put together. Fruit is damaged at temperatures milder than those that hurt the wood, so a tree that comes through a freeze looking perfectly healthy can be carrying a crop that is already ruined.

Damaged fruit is not always obvious from outside. The rind may look untouched while the juice sacs inside have ruptured and the flesh has gone dry and granular. The test is to cut one open. If the segments look watery and collapsed, or dry and pithy, the fruit is gone regardless of how it looks on the tree. Fruit damaged this way also rots quickly, so it will not keep even if it is still edible immediately.

Protection is worth the effort because the crop represents nine months of work. Water the ground the day before a forecast freeze, since moist soil stores and releases far more heat overnight. Throw frost cloth over a frame that keeps fabric off the foliage and take it back down in the morning. On a small tree, string lights of the old incandescent type under the cover raise the temperature by several useful degrees. And accept the pragmatic option: if a genuinely hard freeze is forecast, pick everything and take slightly less sweetness rather than losing all of it.

The pests that matter follow the flush

Citrus pests concentrate on new growth, so they arrive in waves with the spring and midsummer flushes and are largely absent between them. That pattern is useful: it tells you when to inspect and when to leave the tree alone. Look over the new growth twice a week while a flush is extending, and expect to find nothing at all in the months between.

The common cast is small. Aphids cluster on the softest shoot tips and curl them. Scale insects appear as immobile bumps on stems and leaf undersides, easy to mistake for part of the plant. Mealybugs show as white cottony masses in branch crotches. Spider mites cause fine pale stippling on leaves during hot dry weather, with faint webbing underneath. Leafminers make silvery winding tunnels in young leaves. All of them except leafminer produce honeydew, which is why sticky leaves and sooty mold are usually a symptom rather than a disease in themselves.

Most of these are controlled by the same simple sequence, and most do not need controlling at all on an established tree. Ants are the exception worth naming, because ants farm sap-sucking insects, protect them from predators, and will keep an infestation going indefinitely. Deal with the ants and the aphids and scale often collapse on their own.

  1. Inspect the new growth during every flush Turn over young leaves and check shoot tips twice a week while a flush is extending. Nearly every pest problem is trivial when caught in the first week and tedious when caught in the fourth.
  2. Wash off what you can A firm jet of water knocks aphids and mites off and disrupts their colonies. Repeat every few days for a fortnight. This alone resolves most outbreaks on an established tree with no further intervention.
  3. Deal with the ants Band the trunk with a sticky barrier or bait the nest. Ants defend aphids, scale and mealybugs from the predators that would otherwise clear them, so removing the ants is often the whole treatment.
  4. Use horticultural oil only when needed Spray thoroughly including leaf undersides, and never in the heat of the day or during a hot spell, since oil on hot foliage burns. Avoid spraying during bloom, when bees are working the flowers.
  5. Cut out clearly diseased wood promptly Dieback, oozing bark and cankered branches come off well below the damage, in any season. Clean tools between cuts so you are not moving the problem around the tree yourself.

Never spray anything on a tree that is under cold or drought stress, and never during flowering. A stressed tree is damaged by treatments it would shrug off in good condition, and spraying during bloom costs you the pollination that sets the crop.

The problems that are really site or management errors

A large share of what gets reported as tankan disease is nothing of the kind. Sour fruit at full color is the classic example: the tree is healthy, the fruit is intact, and the season simply did not supply enough accumulated heat, or the tree was carrying more fruit than it could finish. The corrections are thinning harder, opening the canopy so more fruit sits in direct sun, and leaving the harvest as late as the cold allows. No spray addresses it.

Split fruit is another. The rind cracks when the flesh swells faster than the peel can stretch, which happens after a heavy watering or a downpour following a dry spell. A tight-rinded fruit like this one is more prone to it than a loose-skinned mandarin. The answer is even soil moisture through mulch and steady watering, not a treatment. Split fruit does not heal; take it off before it rots on the tree.

Yellowing leaves are read as disease far more often than they should be. Uniformly pale foliage across the tree points to nitrogen. Yellow between green veins on new leaves points to iron the roots cannot take up, usually because the soil is too wet or too alkaline rather than because iron is missing. Yellow between the veins of older leaves points to magnesium. Roots standing in water produce all of these symptoms at once while the actual problem is drainage, which is why feeding a waterlogged tree makes things worse.

Finally, a young tree that will not fruit is usually not a problem at all. A grafted tankan takes three to four years from planting to bear, and longer to bear well. A tree grown from seed takes far longer still and does not come true. Patience is the treatment.

Keep a note of what appeared and when

Record the date each pest first appeared, on which part of the tree, and what you did about it. Pests arrive with the flushes at nearly the same point each year, so a single season of notes turns next year's response from reactive to scheduled, and catching a flush infestation in week one instead of week four is most of the battle.

Most importantly for this fruit, record every night the temperature dropped below freezing while the crop was hanging, together with whether you covered the tree and whether any fruit was damaged. Over two or three seasons that log tells you exactly how much risk your site carries, and it is the evidence you need to decide whether to keep gambling on a late harvest or to pick earlier as a matter of policy.
