Tea Plant Care: Acid Soil, Shelter and Feeding for Leaf

A tea plant is grown for soft new leaves, not for flowers or fruit, and everything about its care follows from that. Acid soil, steady moisture and shelter decide how many flushes you get.

You are growing shoots, not a shrub

The crop from a tea plant is the unopened bud at the tip of a new shoot together with the two young leaves just below it. Nothing else on the plant is picked. That means the whole point of care is to make the bush push new shoots, called flushes, as often and as vigorously as it can through the growing season, and to keep those shoots soft enough to be worth picking.

A tea plant left to itself does the opposite. It grows slowly upward, hardens its wood, sets flowers in autumn and settles into being a large evergreen shrub with tough leathery leaves. It stays alive and it looks perfectly healthy, but it produces very little that you would want to put in a cup. Every part of the routine below exists to push the plant the other way.

The plant is a camellia, closely related to the ornamental camellias grown for flowers, and it wants the same conditions: acid soil, shelter from wind, moisture that never fully runs out, and dappled or partial light rather than blazing exposure. Where an ornamental camellia grows well, a tea plant will grow well.

One practical consequence is worth stating early. A tea plant is not a fast crop. A young plant needs roughly three years in the ground before it has enough frame to be picked without setting it back, and the first pickings are small. Care in those three years is about building a wide, low, densely branched bush rather than about taking anything off it.

Acid soil, and how to tell you have failed on it

Tea will not grow properly above about pH 6. In alkaline ground it cannot take up iron and manganese, and it shows this in a way that is easy to read once you know it: the newest leaves turn pale yellow while the veins stay green. Older leaves lower down stay dark for a long time, which is why people often decide the plant is simply young rather than sick.

If your garden soil is chalky or limy, do not try to correct the bed. Lime keeps washing in from the surrounding ground and the plant slides back within a couple of seasons. Grow the plant in a container of acid potting mix instead, where you control the whole root zone, and it will be a better plant than a struggling one in the border.

Where the soil is naturally acid or neutral, work in plenty of composted bark, leaf mold or composted pine needles before planting and keep an acidic mulch topped up around the plant every year. That mulch does two jobs at once: it holds the pH down as it breaks down, and it keeps the surface roots cool and damp, which is exactly where a tea plant feeds.

Hard tap water raises the pH of a container over time even when the mix started right. If your water leaves white scale on a kettle, collect rainwater for the tea plant where you can, and expect to refresh the top few inches of the potting mix every couple of years.

Do not use ordinary garden lime, mushroom compost or wood ash anywhere near a tea plant. All three raise pH, and the yellowing that follows takes a full season to reverse even after you stop.

Water and feed on the flush cycle

A tea bush does not draw down water evenly. It is thirstiest in the days just before and during a flush, when it is extending soft new shoots, and much less demanding once that growth has hardened. If it goes short at the wrong moment, the flush is short, the leaves come small and leathery, and you lose that picking entirely.

Feeding works the same way. Tea responds to nitrogen more than to anything else, because nitrogen is what builds leaf. Give it in several small doses spread through the growing season rather than one heavy feed, and stop feeding well before the end of the season so the last growth has time to harden before cold weather.

Use a feed formulated for acid loving plants, the sort sold for camellias, rhododendrons and blueberries. General purpose fertilizers are usually fine on the nutrients but many of them will drift the pH upward in a container over a season or two.

  1. Water deeply, not often Soak the whole root zone until water runs from the base of a pot or the ground is wet several inches down, then let the surface dry slightly before repeating. Frequent light sprinklings keep roots at the surface where they cook.
  2. Start feeding as growth begins Give the first feed when the buds start to swell in spring, before the first flush extends. Feeding after the flush has already run is too late to help it.
  3. Feed again after each picking Every time you take a flush off, the bush has to build the next one. A light feed within a week of picking keeps the intervals between flushes short.
  4. Stop feeding in late summer Allow roughly two months of unfed growth before the first frosts. Soft late shoots pushed by a late feed are the ones that blacken over winter.
  5. Mulch, and keep mulching Renew an acidic mulch two inches (5 cm) deep each spring, keeping it clear of the stems. It matters more to a tea plant than to most shrubs because the feeding roots sit very close to the surface.

Shelter, sun and plants in pots

Cold dry wind is the most underrated problem with tea in a garden. The plant is evergreen, so it keeps losing water through its leaves all winter, and when the ground is cold or frozen it cannot replace it. The result is brown, crisped leaf margins in late winter that people almost always blame on frost. A hedge, a fence or a group of other shrubs on the windward side fixes it.

On light, tea will take considerably more sun than an ornamental camellia, and in cooler regions it wants it: full sun for at least half the day gives you more flushes and stronger growth. In hot climates the same exposure scorches the young leaves, and light shade through the hottest hours produces a better crop.

A container plant is easier to keep right than a garden one, and it is the usual answer where soil or winters are unsuitable. Use a pot at least sixteen inches (40 cm) across for an established bush, an acid mix, and accept that you will be watering it in summer far more often than anything else on the patio. Move it against a wall for winter rather than indoors: a tea plant kept in a warm dry room all winter grows weakly and picks up scale insects.

Flowers appear in autumn, small, white and pleasantly scented. They are harmless, but every flower and seed pod is energy the plant is not putting into shoots. On a young bush being trained for picking, rub the buds off as they appear. On an older bush that you also enjoy as an ornamental, leave a few and accept slightly less leaf.

What to write down: the date of each spring's first flush, the date and rough weight of every picking, and the dates you fed. After two seasons the interval between pickings, usually somewhere between two and four weeks, becomes predictable for your own garden, and you can plan the year around it instead of checking the bush every day.
