Misting is not enough on its own
An air plant takes water in through scales on the surface of its leaves, and those scales have to be genuinely wet for long enough to absorb. A quick pass with a spray bottle wets the outside for a few minutes and then evaporates, which is why a plant kept on misting alone slowly shrinks, curls harder and browns from the tips inward over several months.
The reliable method is submerging the whole plant. Soaking wets every scale at once, including the ones in the leaf axils that a spray never reaches, and it takes a fraction of the time you would spend misting. Misting is worth doing between soaks in a very dry heated room, but treat it as a supplement and never as the watering itself.
A thirsty air plant tells you clearly: the leaves roll inward along their length and feel light and papery. A well watered one is flatter, heavier in the hand and slightly flexible.
How to soak one properly
The whole procedure takes about twenty minutes of soaking plus a minute of shaking, and the shaking matters more than the soaking. Do it in the morning so the plant has all day to dry in moving air.
- Fill a bowl with tepid water Use water at room temperature, roughly 65 to 75F (18 to 24C). Cold water straight from the tap shocks the plant and slows absorption. Rain water or filtered water is better than hard tap water, which leaves white mineral crust on the leaves over time.
- Submerge the whole plant Push it right under so no part stays dry, including the base. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough for most plants. If one has been neglected and the leaves are tightly rolled, give it an hour, but do not leave anything soaking overnight.
- Lift it out and turn it upside down This is the step people skip and it is the one that decides whether the plant lives. Hold it base upward and shake it firmly two or three times so the water sitting between the leaves runs out. You should see it come out.
- Dry it upside down in moving air Stand it base up on a rack, a towel or in an empty jar for two to four hours, somewhere with air moving past it. It should feel dry to the touch at the base before it goes back on display.
Never put a wet plant straight back into a shell, a hanging orb or any container with a solid bottom. That is exactly the situation that traps water in the base.
Water in the base is what rots them
Almost every air plant that dies indoors dies from rot at the base rather than from drought. Water collects in the funnel where the leaves overlap, sits there in still air, and the tissue at the center turns soft and brown. The plant looks fine from the outside for a week or two, then the inner leaves pull out with no resistance at all.
Once the center is soft there is no repair. That is why the drying routine is not optional and why a plant should never be left sitting in water, however shallow. If you tug gently on a central leaf and it slides free with a wet base, the plant has already gone.

How often to soak, by season and by room
There is no fixed interval. How fast an air plant dries out depends on the temperature, the humidity and how much air moves past it, and those three change a lot between a warm bathroom and a heated living room. Use the table as a starting point and then adjust by how the leaves feel.

Soak in the morning, not the evening. A plant that goes into a cold night still damp in the base is the single most common way people lose one over winter.
Silver plants and green plants want different amounts
Run a finger over the leaves. The silvery, dusty looking plants are covered in dense scales, which is an adaptation to bright, dry, exposed positions: they hold water well and want soaking less often. The greener, smoother, glossier plants have far fewer scales, come from shadier and damper places, and dry out faster.
Practically, that means you should not water a whole shelf of plants on one schedule if they do not all look alike. Soak the silver ones on the long end of the intervals above and the green smooth ones on the short end, and check each type by feel rather than assuming they behave the same.

Feeding, and what to write down
Add a very dilute fertilizer to the soaking water about once a month through spring and summer, at roughly a quarter of the strength you would use for a potted houseplant. Air plants take up nutrients through the same leaf scales, so feeding is simply a soak with something in the water. Stop feeding once the room cools in autumn and do not feed at all through winter.
Keep a short record and next year becomes much easier. Note the date of each soak, which plants you soaked, and where each one sits in the room. Over one season you will see that a plant near a window dries in five days while one on a shelf across the room takes ten, and you can stop guessing. Note the date of any plant that rots, too, along with the conditions at the time, because that pattern is usually a position problem rather than a watering one.
Do not use water that has passed through a domestic water softener. The sodium it adds is worse for air plants than the hardness it removes.
