Udo Care Through the Season: Water, Feeding, Support and Managing the Bulk

What a udo crown needs after the blanched shoots are cut: enough water and feed to rebuild reserves, support against wind, and a plan for six feet of top growth in a small garden.

After cutting, let it grow away

The most important care decision comes immediately after harvest. Once you have taken the blanched shoots you must remove the cover completely, level the mound back down, and let the crown regrow in full light for the rest of the season. That regrowth is not a nuisance to be tidied away, it is the entire mechanism by which the plant rebuilds the reserves for next spring's crop.

A crown that is cut and then repeatedly cut again, or kept covered, or mown down because the top growth was inconvenient, will produce visibly thinner shoots the following spring and may fail entirely within two or three seasons. Treat the summer bulk as the price of the crop.

Pull the mound material away rather than leaving it heaped around the base. Soil piled permanently against the crown holds moisture at the collar and encourages rot at exactly the point where next year's buds will form.

Water: a big plant with a big demand

Udo is not drought tolerant. A plant producing six to eight feet (180-240 cm) of hollow stem and large divided leaves in a single season moves a great deal of water, and a dry spell in early summer shows up the following spring as fewer and thinner blanched shoots.

Aim to keep the soil damp two inches (5 cm) down through the growing season. In practice that means a thorough soak in any week without an inch (25 mm) of rain, applied slowly at the base so it reaches the deep roots rather than running off. Frequent light sprinklings are worse than useless on a plant this size.

The one time to hold back is late in the season. As the leaves begin to yellow in autumn the plant is shutting down, and a soggy bed through the dormant months is a far greater risk than a dry one. Stop supplementary watering once dieback starts.

Wilting in midsummer heat that recovers by evening is normal for a plant with leaves this large and does not mean the soil is dry. Check two inches (5 cm) down with your finger before watering; watering a plant that is only heat-wilting adds to the waterlogging risk without helping.

Feeding for next year, not this one

Everything you feed a udo crown after harvest goes into next spring's shoots. Spread a balanced granular feed over the root area as the regrowth starts, at the rate a packet gives for leafy vegetables, and follow it with an inch (2.5 cm) of well-rotted compost across the whole circle the plant occupies, not just around the crown.

Stop nitrogen by midsummer. Late soft growth does not harden before frost, adds nothing to root reserves, and makes an already top-heavy plant more likely to break in autumn wind.

The annual compost mulch matters more than the fertilizer. A crown that gets two to three inches (5-8 cm) of compost or rotted manure every autumn will crop well for a decade without any other feeding, and the loose surface it builds is also what makes spring mounding easy.

Support and containing the bulk

Hollow stems six feet tall with a heavy leaf canopy are vulnerable to wind, and a stem that snaps at the base tears the crown. In any site that is not genuinely sheltered, put in support early rather than after the first storm.

The simplest method is three or four stout stakes five feet (150 cm) tall driven in around each crown as the stems reach two feet (60 cm), with twine run round them at two feet and again at four feet (60 cm and 120 cm). Corral the clump rather than tying individual stems, which are too soft to take a tie without bruising.

If the plant is genuinely too large for the space, the honest answer is to move or divide it in the dormant season rather than to keep cutting it back. Cutting stems down in summer to control size directly reduces next spring's crop, and a plant kept permanently trimmed will eventually stop producing shoots worth blanching.

Closing the season and the notes that pay off

After the first hard frost the stems yellow, soften and collapse. Cut them off at ground level and clear the debris away rather than leaving it over the crown, where it holds moisture and shelters slugs through winter. Then spread the annual compost dressing and leave the crown alone until it is time to build the blanching cover again.

This is the moment to write the season up. Record the number of stems the crown carried, the maximum height it reached, whether it needed staking and whether the staking held, how many weeks you watered, and any period of visible stress. Note also the date the top growth died back, since that marks the start of the dormant window in which all structural work must be done.

Those figures are the only reliable way to see whether a crown is gaining or losing vigor. Shoot count and height in summer predict the following spring's blanched crop far better than anything you can observe in spring itself, and a crown that put up fifteen stems last year and eight this year has told you a season in advance that something needs attention.
