Vanda Orchid Problems: Crown Rot, Thrips and Roots That Shrivel

Most vanda losses come down to two things: water left sitting in the leaf axils overnight, and roots that dry out faster than the plant can cope with. Here is how to spot both early and what to do.

Crown rot: the one that kills the plant outright

A vanda has one growing point at the top of one stem. Lose it and upward growth stops for good, so crown rot is not a setback but usually a fatal event. It starts with water trapped in the tight V of a leaf axil near the top, held there overnight in still, cool air. Bacteria get into the soft tissue at the base of the youngest leaf, and within two or three days the area goes water-soaked and translucent, then brown, then soft and foul-smelling. The newest leaf pulls out of the crown with almost no resistance.

Act the moment you see translucency. Move the plant somewhere warm and dry with a fan on it, tip it well over so nothing can pool, and remove any affected leaf by pulling it cleanly away. Dust or paint the exposed tissue with cinnamon or a copper-based fungicide and keep water off the top of the plant entirely for a week or two, watering only the roots. Caught within a day or two of the first translucent patch, plants do survive; caught after the smell, they do not.

Prevention is entirely about timing. Water in the morning, never in the evening, so the axils dry before nightfall. Keep air moving across the plant around the clock. If you have to water late, physically shake or blot the crown dry. Growers who follow that one rule almost never see crown rot at all.

Never mist a vanda at the end of the day, and never leave one standing upright in a closed bathroom or terrarium overnight after watering. Both put still water in the crown in still air, which is precisely the condition rot needs.

Thrips, mites and the pests that ruin flowers

Thrips are the main flower pest. They are slim dark insects a sixteenth of an inch (1 to 2 mm) long that live inside buds and rasp at the developing petals, so the damage appears only as the flower opens, streaked, distorted and brown at the edges. Tap a spike over white paper and watch for specks that run rather than stay put. Because they breed inside the bud, one treatment is never enough: repeat at five to seven day intervals for three rounds so you catch each hatch.

Spider mites go for the leaves, particularly in hot dry indoor air in winter. Look for fine pale stippling on the upper leaf surface and a faint dusty webbing in the leaf joints; a leaf that has lost its gloss and gone slightly gray is usually mites. Raising humidity and hosing the leaves hard, top and bottom, knocks the population down; a horticultural oil or soap spray finishes it, again repeated at weekly intervals.

Because vanda leaves are thick and leathery, they take a firm physical wash better than most orchids. A weekly hosing of the whole plant during warm months, aimed up under the leaves, prevents most of these problems from establishing in the first place. Just do it in the morning.

Scale and mealybug on a bare stem

The naked stem of a vanda, with its overlapping old leaf bases, is ideal cover for scale and mealybug. Scale shows as small brown or tan limpet-shaped bumps clamped to the stem, the undersides of leaves and the leaf bases, and it is easy to mistake for part of the plant. Mealybug shows as white cottony fluff wedged into the same joints. Both feed on sap, both cause slow decline and yellowing, and both are spread by the ants that farm them.

Because there is no medium to hide in, treatment on a vanda is straightforward. Scrape the visible insects off with a fingernail or a soft brush, then swab every joint, both leaf surfaces and the whole stem with a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Follow with a light horticultural oil spray to smother anything you missed, and repeat the whole procedure weekly for at least three weeks to catch newly hatched crawlers.

Peel back the dead papery leaf bases on the lower stem while you are working, because that is where the survivors sit. Just check the crown for trapped alcohol or oil afterward and dry it out, since a rot at the top is a worse outcome than the scale you were treating.

Root problems: shriveled, blackened and lost

Healthy vanda roots are thick, firm and silver-white when dry, turning bright green within seconds of contact with water, with a shiny green growing tip at the end. A root that stays dull gray when wetted has lost its velamen function and is dead inside. A root that goes wrinkled, papery and thin along its length is dehydrated, which on a bare-root plant means either the soaks are too short or the air is too dry between them.

Blackened, mushy root sections happen the other way, when a plant is grown in a mix that holds water or is left standing in a saucer. Cut dead sections back to firm tissue with a sterile blade and leave the wounds open to dry. Do not seal them. A vanda can lose a surprising fraction of its root mass and recover, provided it is kept warm, at high humidity, and misted lightly on the remaining roots rather than fully soaked while it rebuilds.

Green root tips are the recovery signal. New tips extending means the plant has turned the corner and normal watering and weak feeding can resume. No new tips after a month of good conditions means the crown or stem base is the real problem, so check there before spending another season on it.

A weekly look, and what to log

Because the whole plant is exposed, a vanda inspection takes under a minute and there is nowhere for trouble to hide. Once a week, lift the basket to eye level and check the crown for any translucent patch, run a finger down the stem and into the leaf axils feeling for bumps and fluff, look at the undersides of two or three leaves for stippling, and glance at the root tips for green growing points.

Log what you find with the date: which pest, where on the plant, what you sprayed and how many times. Note the date any root or leaf was cut away and whether the plant regrew from it. Note the weather or room conditions in the week before a crown rot or a bud blast, because those events almost always follow a specific change rather than appearing at random.

After two seasons the log tells you your own pattern. Most growers find they get thrips at the same point in the flowering cycle and mites in the same dry indoor stretch each year, and once you know that, you treat a week before rather than a week after.
