Nothing in the pot, and why that is correct
A vanda in the wild hangs from a branch in bright tropical air with its roots dangling free, gripping bark only loosely and taking everything it needs from rain, dew and whatever washes down the trunk. Growers copy that directly. The plant goes in an open teak or plastic slat basket with nothing in it, or is simply hung on a wire with the roots in open air, and the long silver roots are left to swing. This looks like neglect to anyone used to houseplants and it is the single most reliable way to keep a vanda alive.
The reason is oxygen. Vanda roots are thick, and each one is sheathed in velamen, a spongy white layer that soaks up water in seconds and then dries just as fast. Velamen that stays wet for hours suffocates and rots, and once a root turns brown and mushy at the base it does not come back. A pot of bark or moss holds water against those roots for a day or more, which is exactly the condition they cannot tolerate. Open air dries them in an hour, so the plant can be soaked hard every single day without any risk of standing wet.
Some growers do use a coarse basket of large bark chunks or lava rock, and that works in a dry climate or a heated winter room where bare roots would shrivel between waterings. Treat that mix as a humidity buffer rather than a growing medium: it should be so open you can see daylight through the basket, and it should never be packed down.

Feeding: weak, constant, and never onto dry roots
With no medium there is no reservoir. Every nutrient a vanda gets arrives in the water you give it and is gone within the hour, which means the usual advice of a strong feed once a month starves the plant for the other twenty-nine days. Feed weakly and feed almost every time instead: a balanced soluble orchid fertilizer at roughly a quarter of the label strength, at three or four waterings out of five during warm active growth, with one plain-water flush in between to rinse off anything that has crystallized on the velamen.
In practical numbers that is around 100 to 150 parts per million of nitrogen at each feed. If your fertilizer label gives no ppm figure, a quarter teaspoon of a balanced powder in a gallon (about 4 liters) of water is close enough. Warm, brightly lit vandas in full growth are heavy feeders and will take more than most orchids; a plant that is cool, dim or resting takes far less, so drop back to a feed once a week when growth slows and the days shorten.
Always wet the roots with plain water first, wait a minute for the velamen to turn green, then apply the fertilizer solution. Fertilizer hitting bone-dry velamen concentrates as it soaks in and burns the root tips, which show up a week later as blackened growing points that stop extending. White crusting on the roots or basket means salts are building up, so give a long plain-water soak once every couple of weeks to wash them off.
Do not feed a vanda that has lost most of its roots or is sitting cold. A stressed plant cannot use the nutrients and the salt load makes the remaining root tips worse. Get it warm, humid and rooting again on plain water first.
One stem, growing upward forever
A vanda is monopodial, meaning it grows from a single growing point at the top of one upright stem, adding a pair of leaves at a time and pushing thick aerial roots out sideways from the stem as it climbs. There are no pseudobulbs, no back divisions and no creeping rhizome, so a vanda is never divided the way a cattleya or a cymbidium is. If you try to split it in half you simply kill it.
What you can do is top it. Once the plant has grown tall and leggy, with several strong aerial roots emerging from the stem well above the basket, cut the stem cleanly below three or four of those roots with a sterile blade. The top piece, with its growing point and its own roots, is hung as a new plant; the bottom stump usually pushes one or two side shoots, or keikis, from dormant buds within a season. Do this in warm weather when the plant is growing hard, never in a cool dim spell.
Because the growing point is the only one there is, protect it. Damage to the crown from rot, a knock or a sunburnt new leaf ends upward growth permanently, and the plant then depends entirely on whether it can push a side shoot lower down. That is why the crown-drying habit described below matters more on a vanda than on almost any other orchid.
Air, humidity and the leaf axils
Vandas want humidity in the 60 to 80 percent range and they want it moving. Still, saturated air is what allows rot spores to sit on wet tissue long enough to get in; the same humidity with a fan running is harmless and the plant thrives. Hanging the basket in a spot with a light constant breeze, indoors or out, does more for a vanda's health than any spray program.
The leaf axils are the weak point. On a strap-leaf vanda the leaves clasp the stem in overlapping V-shaped joints, and each one holds a teaspoon of water like a little cup. Water sitting in those cups overnight, in still cool air, is how crown rot starts: the tissue goes translucent, then brown and soft, and by the time you notice a smell the growing point is already gone. Water in the morning so that everything is dry by dusk, and if you have watered late, tip the plant sideways and shake the axils out or blot them with a paper towel.
Leaves themselves tell you a lot in passing. A well-run vanda holds stiff leaves in a flat fan with the lower ones staying on the stem for years. Losing the bottom pair now and then is normal; losing several in a season, or seeing leaves go limp and leathery, means the roots are not taking up water and you should look at the roots rather than the leaves.
What to write down this year
Keep a note of how many waterings a day the plant actually needed through the hottest stretch and how quickly the velamen went white again afterward. That drying time is the real measurement of your conditions, and next year it tells you within a week when to step up from one soak to two rather than guessing from the weather.
Record where the plant hung, how far from the glass and on which side of the house, along with the date you moved it and the date you moved it back. Note the temperature on the coldest night it experienced outdoors. Add the date each new leaf finished expanding, the date any flower spike appeared and from which leaf axil it emerged, and the date you last topped the plant or a keiki appeared. Over two or three seasons those notes turn a plant you are managing by feel into one you can plan around.
