Bunching Shallot Care: Watering, Feeding and Keeping Clumps Productive

Once the clumps are established, bunching shallot asks for very little: even moisture in the growing months, light regular feeding after each cut, and a firm decision to stop watering when it goes dormant in summer.

Feed after every cut, not on a calendar

Every time you cut the tops you remove the plant's entire leaf area, and it rebuilds that from reserves in the bulb. Those reserves need replacing or the regrowth gets thinner with each cut until the clump is producing grass rather than usable green onions. Feed within a day or two of cutting, while the plant is actively pushing new leaf.

A liquid feed with a nitrogen bias suits this crop. Something in the range of a balanced feed diluted at half strength, applied every second or third cut, keeps the tops thick and dark without producing the soft floppy growth that heavy feeding causes. Alternatively scatter a light dressing of a nitrogen-rich dry fertilizer along the row and water it in.

Stop all feeding as soon as the tops begin to yellow in early summer. Feeding a plant that is trying to go dormant produces soft bulbs that will not store through the dry period.

Water evenly while growing, then stop completely

The root system is shallow and fibrous, sitting mostly in the top four inches (10 cm) of soil. That means the plant runs out of water quickly in a dry spell but also that it does not need deep soaking. Aim for the top few inches to stay evenly damp through autumn, winter and spring, checking by pushing a finger in rather than by watching the surface, which dries misleadingly fast.

The hard part is the reverse decision. When the tops start to yellow in early summer, the plant is going dormant on purpose and it wants dry soil. Watering a dormant clump is the most reliable way to lose the whole stock to rot. Turn the water off, and if the bed is under an automatic system, take that row off the circuit.

  1. Check moisture at finger depth Push a finger two inches (5 cm) into the soil beside a clump. If it comes out with damp soil clinging, do nothing. If it comes out clean and dry, water thoroughly enough to wet the top four inches (10 cm).
  2. Water in the morning Morning watering lets the leaf bases dry before evening. Water sitting in the crowded neck of a clump overnight is how neck rot and downy mildew get their start.
  3. Water the soil, not the leaves Direct the can or hose at the base. The hollow tops shed water anyway, and wetting them repeatedly encourages leaf disease without getting moisture to the roots.
  4. Cut water off at the first yellowing As soon as a quarter of the tops in a clump are yellowing in early summer, stop watering that clump. It is entering dormancy, and it should finish drying down naturally.

Keep the crowns clear and the clumps divided

A bunching shallot clump gets denser every season. Left alone for three or four years, the center of an old clump goes woody, the shoots come up thin as chives, and the whole thing is more susceptible to rot because air never moves through the middle. The single most valuable maintenance job is lifting and splitting the clumps each summer while the tops are down.

Between splits, keep the base of each clump clear. Pull weeds by hand rather than hoeing close in, because the shallow roots run out further than the clump looks and a hoe blade cuts them. Rake away fallen yellow leaves rather than letting them mat around the necks, where they hold moisture against the bulbs.

Mulch the row but keep the mulch an inch (2.5 cm) clear of the necks. Mulch touching the bulbs traps moisture exactly where you least want it and gives slugs a covered approach.

Growing in containers

This crop takes well to pots because it is shallow-rooted and stays small. A container eight inches (20 cm) deep is enough, and three bulbs in a twelve inch (30 cm) pot will fill it within a season. Use a free-draining mix and make sure every drainage hole is genuinely open, because the summer dormancy period in a waterlogged pot kills the bulbs.

Containers dry out faster and feed washes through, so feed at half strength every ten days while the plant is growing. The one advantage of a pot is control over the dormant period: move the pot somewhere sheltered from summer rain and let it dry out completely, and the bulbs come through in better condition than they often do in open ground.

What to note down through the season

Keep a running note of the date of each cut and how much you took from each clump. Over a season that tells you the actual regrowth interval in your own conditions, which is far more useful than a general figure, and it shows you the point where regrowth starts slowing and the clump needs a rest or a feed.

Record the date the tops first start yellowing in early summer, and the date they are fully down. Those two dates shift by a couple of weeks year to year with the weather, and knowing your own average tells you when to have the drying rack ready and when to stop watering the bed.
