The plant is not the victim here
If you come to bracken from vegetable growing, this page will read strangely. There is no pest list to speak of. Bracken is unpalatable to most insects, tough enough to shrug off wind and drought, and resistant to nearly everything that troubles garden plants. A few specialist moth caterpillars feed on it, some rust and leaf spot appear in wet summers, and late frost can blacken emerging shoots. None of it threatens the stand.
The hazards worth a page are the ones bracken presents to people, to grazing animals, and to the land around it. Those are real, well documented, and the reason bracken is regulated as an injurious weed in a number of countries. Taking them seriously is simply part of growing the plant.
The one plant problem that genuinely costs you a crop is a hard late frost hitting shoots that have already emerged. Frosted shoots go black and limp within a day and are not worth cutting. The stand itself is unharmed and will push a second, usually smaller, flush a couple of weeks later. Nothing needs doing except waiting.
Ticks: the most likely thing to actually harm you
Bracken stands are classic tick habitat. The dense canopy holds humidity at ground level, the deep litter layer gives ticks somewhere to survive, and the stand usually sits alongside grazing or deer country. In many regions the risk of Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections is measurably higher in bracken than in adjacent open ground, and shoot harvesting happens in spring, which is peak tick season.
The precautions are ordinary and effective. Wear long trousers tucked into socks and long sleeves when working in the stand. Use a repellent containing DEET or picaridin on exposed skin, or treat clothing with permethrin where that is available. Light-colored clothing makes ticks visible before they attach. Stay on your cut paths rather than wading through the densest growth where possible.
Do a full tick check within a few hours of every session in the stand, including the scalp, behind the ears, waistband, armpits and behind the knees. Remove any attached tick promptly with fine-pointed tweezers, gripping close to the skin and pulling straight out without twisting or crushing the body. Note the date and the bite location, and watch for an expanding rash or flu-like symptoms over the following weeks. Seek medical advice if either appears.
The single most useful habit is checking on the same day, every time, not just when you remember. Prompt removal substantially reduces transmission risk for several tick-borne infections, and a tick found the same evening is far better than one found three days later.
Spores and dust when handling dry fronds
From midsummer onwards mature bracken fronds produce spores on their undersides, and dead dry fronds break down into a fine irritant dust. Both become airborne as soon as material is raked, strimmed, rolled, bundled or moved. Bracken spores have been investigated for carcinogenic potential and repeated inhalation is a genuine concern rather than a theoretical one, quite apart from the immediate irritation to eyes, nose and airways.
Work with dry bracken in a fitted particulate mask rated FFP2 or N95 or better, and wear eye protection if you are strimming. Choose still, damp conditions over hot dry breezy ones. Avoid handling large volumes inside a shed, barn or trailer where dust concentrates; move it in the open. Cut fronds green in spring or early summer if you have the choice, before spores form.
Do not burn large heaps of dry bracken close to the house or where anyone is standing downwind, and never burn it in an enclosed space. If you use bracken as a bulky mulch on ornamental beds, cut and lay it green, which keeps the dust problem out of the job entirely.
Livestock, pets and neighboring land
Bracken poisons grazing animals. Cattle that eat it develop bone marrow suppression and haemorrhagic disease, and long-term exposure is linked to cancers of the bladder and upper digestive tract. Horses and other monogastric animals suffer thiamine deficiency, showing as incoordination and neurological signs, because of the thiaminase in the plant. Sheep are affected too, including eye lesions from prolonged grazing on bracken ground. Animals normally avoid it when better forage exists, and eat it when it is dry, when pasture is poor, or when it is baled in with hay.
The practical consequences are straightforward. Fence livestock out of bracken ground rather than trusting them to avoid it. Never cut bracken into hay or use bracken-contaminated bedding for animals that will eat it. Dogs are not grazers and are at low risk from the plant itself, but they collect ticks from a bracken stand faster than you do, so treat them accordingly.
Neighboring land is the other exposure. Rhizomes crossing a boundary into someone else's grazing or garden is a real dispute waiting to happen and, in some jurisdictions, a legal liability. This is the practical argument for the boundary barrier and the inspection strip described on the planting page: they are not tidiness, they are the thing that keeps the problem yours.

Misidentification, and keeping a hazard log
Several ferns produce curled shoots in spring and they are not interchangeable. Bracken is identified by its shoot emerging singly from the ground rather than in a ring or clump, by the coarse woolly hairs on the young stalk, and by the mature frond, which is large, triangular and divided into three main branches from a single tall stem. If you cannot confidently name the plant from its mature fronds the previous season, do not cut its shoots. Identify in summer, harvest the following spring.
Keep a short written hazard log alongside your growing notes. Record any tick bite with the date and where on the body, since that record matters if symptoms appear weeks later. Record the date of any frost damage to shoots, which builds a picture of how exposed your site really is. Record where you found escaping rhizomes and how far outside the barrier they were, because escapes tend to recur in the same weak spot and a note tells you where to look first next spring.
None of this takes more than a few lines a year, and all of it is the kind of thing you are certain you will remember and reliably do not.
