The temperature band is narrow and it is not negotiable
Wasabi grows best between 50 and 60F (10 and 16C). It will keep going, more slowly, from about 45F to 70F (7 to 21C). Above 75F (24C) it stops making rhizome and starts shedding older leaves; sustained days above 85F (29C) with warm nights will kill established plants outright, and warm water is more lethal than warm air because it carries the heat straight to the roots. Below about 25F (minus 4C) the leaves are cut back, and although a mulched crown survives short frosts, a frozen root zone in a container is usually fatal.
This is why placement dominates everything else. You are not looking for a spot the plant will tolerate, you are looking for the coolest microclimate on your property and then making it cooler. Night temperature matters as much as day temperature: a site that drops to 55F (13C) after a warm afternoon is far better than one that holds 70F (21C) all night under a wall that has been baking.

Shade that lasts all day
Wasabi grows on shaded stream banks under a canopy, and that is the light level to copy: bright enough to read by, with no direct sun on the leaves at any point in the day. Dappled light moving across the bed is acceptable; a patch of direct afternoon sun for an hour is not, because that hour is usually the hottest and the leaves scorch along the margins.
Assess the site in midsummer, not in spring. A bed under deciduous trees that looks perfectly shaded when you plant in autumn can be a very different place after leaf fall, and a north wall that is shaded in spring may take three hours of low sun at the height of summer. If the natural shade is imperfect, 60 to 80 percent shade cloth on a simple frame two feet (60 cm) above the plants fixes it, and it also cuts the wind that dries the leaves.
Air movement under the shade matters. Wasabi wants humid, cool, moving air. Enclosed still shade under a solid cover encourages fungal spotting on the leaves and heats up like a greenhouse on a bright day.
Moving water versus damp soil
In water culture, plants sit in a gravel bed with cool water running slowly and continuously through the root zone. The flow does two jobs: it holds the root temperature down, and it keeps oxygen at the roots. A gentle trickle that visibly moves through the gravel is enough. What kills plants is water that stops, warms and stagnates, so a recirculating system needs shading of the reservoir and the pipework, not just the bed.
In soil culture, the equivalent is ground that is permanently damp and permanently free-draining. Think of a slope below a spring, or the shaded foot of a bank where seepage keeps the soil dark and cool but never puddles. You can create this with a raised bed of very open, humus-rich mix in a shaded spot, watered often. What you cannot do is create it in a sealed container of dense compost, which alternates between waterlogged and dry and gives you the worst of both.
Containers can work, but only large ones in a permanently shaded, cool spot. A pot smaller than fourteen inches (35 cm) across swings too far in temperature on any warm afternoon, and the root zone is the part of the plant that cannot cope with that swing. Set containers on the ground rather than on a hot paved surface, and group them so they shade each other.
Reading the site through the year
Put a cheap min-max thermometer at soil level in the bed, and read it weekly through the warmest part of the year. This tells you far more than any general climate description of your area, because wasabi lives in the last few degrees of the microclimate. A shaded, damp north-facing corner can easily run 10F (5C) cooler than the open garden ten feet away, and that difference is exactly the difference between a plant that grows and one that stalls.
Keep a note of the highest soil or water temperature reached each summer, the date leaves first scorched if they did, and the coldest reading in winter. After one full year you will know whether your site is genuinely inside the band or whether you were on the edge of it, and the honest answer at that point saves you a second wasted year.
