Scale insects and the sooty mold that follows
Scale insects are the most frequent pest on wisteria. They appear as small, flat or slightly domed, brownish or grayish limpet-like bumps clamped onto the bark, usually clustered on the undersides of the main arms, in the crotches where side shoots leave the trunk, and along the older wood where they are easy to overlook. They do not move once settled, which is why people mistake them for a bark feature.
The obvious sign is usually not the insect but the sticky honeydew they excrete, which coats the leaves and anything below the plant, and the black sooty mold that grows on the honeydew. A patio, a car, or the leaves of plants under a wisteria turning shiny and then sooty in midsummer means scale on the wood above. Ants running up and down the trunk are another reliable indicator, because they farm the honeydew.
Inspect the bare framework in the dormant season, when scale is easiest to see and easiest to deal with. Light infestations can be scrubbed off with a stiff brush or rubbed off by hand. Heavy infestations on a large plant are hard to eradicate completely; the practical target is suppression, by removing the worst-affected stubs during the winter prune, brushing what you can reach, and keeping the plant open enough that light and air reach the wood. Sooty mold itself does no direct damage but blocks light on leaves and washes off with plain water once the scale is gone.

When a whole arm dies back
The characteristic wisteria failure is one main arm wilting and browning over a few weeks while the rest of the plant carries on normally. Because the plant is large and the arm is often high up, it is usually noticed once the leaves have already crisped. There are three common explanations and they are distinguishable if you follow the dead wood back to where it joins live tissue.
The most common is a constricting tie. Look for a wire, plastic clip or old string embedded in the bark somewhere below the dead section, with a swelling above it. That is a ring-barked stem and the arm cannot be saved, though the plant can. Cut back to healthy wood below the constriction and train a replacement shoot into the space, and go round every other tie on the plant the same day.
The second is mechanical damage: a stem cracked where it was bent sharply over a beam or wedged in a narrow gap, or crushed by its own twining around a post. The third is dieback entering through a large wound or a dead snag left by a bad pruning cut. In every case the response is the same: cut back cleanly into sound, pale, live wood, taking the cut to a junction rather than leaving a stub, dispose of the dead material, and select a young shoot to replace the lost arm. A mature wisteria regenerates readily from old wood, so losing an arm is a setback of two to four years rather than a disaster.
Frost, bud drop and a spring that promises more than it gives
Wisteria buds swell conspicuously in early spring and open before or with the leaves. That timing puts fat, water-filled buds in exactly the period when late frosts arrive. A hard frost on swollen buds browns them and they drop without opening, and there is nothing to be done about it once it has happened; a large plant cannot be covered.
The damage is worth recognizing for what it is, because it looks like a failure of pruning or feeding when it is not. The distinguishing feature is that the buds formed properly and were visibly fat in winter, then browned and fell in spring rather than never appearing at all. If your winter bud count was good and your spring was empty, the cause is almost always weather.
Position is the only real preventive measure and it is decided at planting. Avoid frost pockets, low ground where cold air collects, and east-facing positions where early morning sun thaws frosted buds rapidly, which does more damage than the frost itself. A wall position several feet above ground level is generally safer than an open pergola in a hollow. Note frost dates and bud condition each spring, because two or three years of records make it obvious whether your site has a recurring frost problem or had one unlucky year.
Every part of wisteria is toxic if eaten, and the seeds and pods are the most poisonous parts. Two or three seeds are enough to make a child seriously ill. Remove the pods after a heavy flowering year, clear fallen ones from the ground, and keep prunings and pods out of reach of children and animals.
The structural hazards, which are the serious ones
No pest on wisteria is as damaging as the plant's own growth habit. A mature vine weighs a great deal, the weight increases every year, and it is applied to whatever the stems have twined around. Gutters are pulled off their brackets. Downpipes are crushed and split. Stems that reach under weatherboarding, behind fascia boards or beneath roof tiles thicken and lever those surfaces apart, and the resulting water ingress is discovered long after the cause.
Trellis panels and thin wire supports fail rather than damage the house, which is the better outcome but still means a collapsed plant. Wooden pergola posts fail at ground level where rot starts, and a wisteria-laden pergola that loses a post can come down in one movement. Check the structure annually, at the same time as the ties, and treat any softness in a post base or any sag in a beam as urgent.
The management rule is simple and needs applying continuously rather than seasonally. Keep the top of the plant at least three feet (90 cm) clear of gutters and roofline. Cut off any shoot heading towards the house structure as soon as you see it, at any time of year, without waiting for the pruning rounds. Never allow a stem to twine around a pipe, cable or bracket; unwind it while it is still flexible and tie it against a proper support instead.
Underground, wisteria roots are strong and travel widely on an old plant. Site a new one well clear of drains, shallow foundations and paving that you would mind being lifted, allowing at least ten feet (3 m) from a house wall for a plant intended to reach full size, and grow it on wires that bring it back to the wall rather than planting it against the brickwork.
