What you are looking at
The insect is a moth barely a quarter of an inch (5 mm) across, silvery with dark markings, flying at dusk. Almost nobody sees it. What you see is the tunnel its larva makes as it feeds between the two surfaces of a soft new leaf: a pale, winding, silvery track that gets steadily wider along its length, usually with a thin dark line of waste running down the center.
The leaf reacts by curling, generally rolling one edge over the tunnel, and the surface goes crumpled and blistered. Badly hit shoot tips have every leaf twisted into a tube. Because the damage sits inside the leaf rather than on it, you cannot wipe it off, and contact sprays cannot reach the larva.
Only expanding leaves are at risk. Once a leaf has hardened it is immune, so the damage is always confined to the newest growth and always appears after a flush, never on the old canopy.

How much it matters on a yuzu
On an established tree with a full canopy, this is a cosmetic problem. Leafminer can only take the newest flush, the old leaves carry on working, and the fruit is untouched. A yuzu that looks wrecked at the shoot tips in late summer usually ripens a perfectly normal crop.
It matters in one situation, and yuzu is unusually exposed to it. A young grafted tree in a cold garden makes one main flush a year and very little leaf area beyond it. Lose that flush to leafminer and the tree has lost most of its season, which delays the point at which it is woody enough to be reliably hardy. Repeated damage on a tree in its first two or three years is worth preventing.
There is a second reason to pay attention on a cold-garden yuzu. Leafminer damage tends to push the tree into a late secondary flush to replace the lost leaves, and that late soft growth is exactly what fails to harden before winter. The pest itself is minor; the late flush it provokes is not.
What actually works
The effective approach is to move your one flush earlier in the season, so that the leaves have hardened before moth numbers build to their peak in late summer. Feed early, get a strong flush away in spring, and then stop feeding so that the growth hardens off. Everything else is secondary to that.
- Do not spray insecticide at the tunnels The larva is sealed inside the leaf and contact sprays cannot touch it. All you achieve is killing the parasitic wasps that do control it, which makes the following season worse rather than better.
- Use horticultural oil only while leaves are expanding A light horticultural or neem oil discourages the moth from laying on a leaf. It is preventative only, so begin as the flush starts, repeat every seven to ten days while leaves are soft, and stop once they harden. Never apply oil above 90F (32C) or in direct sun.
- Leave the damaged leaves on the tree A curled, mined leaf still produces energy for the tree. Picking it off costs more than the leafminer did. On a young yuzu with little leaf area this matters more than on most citrus.
- Do not feed or prune in late summer Both provoke a fresh flush at the exact point when moth numbers peak. The result is a heavily mined, soft flush that will not harden before frost, which is a genuine problem on a yuzu rather than a cosmetic one.
- Net a young tree if you must Fine insect mesh draped over the canopy through the main flush is the only fully reliable barrier, and it is realistic on a tree under about four feet (1.2 m). Be aware that mesh on a yuzu snags on the thorns and tears, so use it loosely over a frame rather than wrapping it against the branches.
In gardens that are not sprayed, parasitic wasps usually get on top of citrus leafminer within two or three seasons, and a large share of the larvae are killed by them by late summer. The most common reason the problem persists is a routine insecticide that keeps removing those wasps.
Record the flush, not the pest
This is a timing problem, so timing is what you should be writing down. Each year record the date the spring flush began, the date the leaves had hardened, and the date you first saw a silver tunnel, plus a rough severity score out of five.
Two seasons of that tells you how many weeks of gap you have between your flush hardening and the moth arriving. If the gap is negative, the fix is to move your feeding earlier, and the record is what will show you whether the change worked. Also note any late secondary flush, because on a yuzu that is the entry that predicts winter damage the following spring.
