How the year is shaped
A rain lily year has three phases rather than twelve months of tasks. There is a start, when warming soil and a first soaking bring the bulbs into growth. There is a long warm middle, when you deliberately alternate dry spells and heavy waterings to produce repeated flushes of flower. And there is a wind-down, when growth slows, foliage goes over in the deciduous species, and your job becomes keeping the bulbs dry and, where winters are cold, keeping them from freezing.
Because the flowering is driven by rain and warmth rather than by day length, the schedule below is written around conditions rather than dates. That also means it reads the same way in either hemisphere. Use soil temperature and the last and first frosts as your markers.
The overall workload is light. Beyond the initial planting, a rain lily clump asks for a monthly feed in growth, a soaking every few weeks, some deadheading and a division every four to seven years.
Season by season
The table gives the whole cycle at a glance. Nothing in it is urgent to the day, but the order matters: waking the bulbs too early and watering them into dormancy are the two mistakes with real consequences.

Cold climates: lift the bulbs or move the pots
Hardiness varies by species, and in cold regions rain lilies are not reliably a leave-them-in-the-ground plant. Where the ground freezes hard, the two workable approaches are lifting or growing in containers, and containers are much less work.
If the clump is in a pot, the whole thing goes under cover once the foliage has gone over: a frost-free shed, a garage, a cold frame or an unheated porch, kept dark or light as convenient but above all kept dry and above freezing. Nothing else is required until spring, and the bulbs are never disturbed.
If the clump is in the ground, lift it after the foliage dies back. Fork up the whole mass, shake off the soil, dry the bulbs for a few days somewhere airy and out of direct sun, discard any that are soft, and store them in labeled paper bags or trays of dry sand at around 50 to 60F (10 to 16C). Replant in spring once the soil has warmed. In borderline climates, leaving the clump in place under a four-inch (10 cm) dry mulch of bark, straw or leaves, pulled off in spring, often works, especially in a sheltered spot against a sunny wall.
Label every storage bag and every pot going into winter quarters with the plant name and a note that the bulbs are toxic. Bulbs in a shed over winter are exactly the ones that get mistaken for onions months later, when nobody remembers putting them there.
The jobs that only come round every few years
Most of the schedule repeats annually, but two tasks run on a longer cycle and are easy to lose track of.
- Divide congested clumps every four to seven years Do it in the dormant season or just as growth restarts, and only when flushes have visibly thinned, leaves have shortened, and bulbs are mounding up out of the soil. Pull the mass apart by hand, discard soft bulbs, and replant immediately at the same shallow depth and close spacing.
- Refresh container compost every two to three years Pot-grown clumps exhaust their mix faster than ground plantings. In spring, tip the pot out, shake most of the old compost off the bulbs, and repot into a fresh gritty mix at the same density. Do not move up a pot size unless the clump has genuinely outgrown it.
- Review the site after three seasons If a clump has had three warm seasons with proper dry-and-drench cycles and is still flowering thinly, the position is wrong rather than the routine. Move it to the sunniest, best-drained spot you have during the next dormant season.
- Deal with self-sown seedlings Where the plant seeds around, work through the gravel and bed edges once a year and either pot up the seedlings or remove them. They take two to three years to reach flowering size, so a colony builds up quietly if you never look.
Building your own calendar from records
The schedule above is a framework; the version that actually fits your garden comes from what you write down this year. Four entries carry most of the value: the date you gave the first soaking of the season and the date the first leaf appeared, the date of each flush and how many days after a soaking it came, the date the foliage finally went over, and the date you put pots away or lifted bulbs.
After two seasons those notes turn into a personal calendar that is far more accurate than any general advice, because it is keyed to your soil, your aspect and your weather. You will know how long your dry spell needs to be, how many flushes to expect, and how late in the season it is still worth trying to force one. Add a note of where every clump is and when it was last divided, and the yearly round becomes a matter of reading last year's page rather than deciding again from scratch.
