Overview

Early Prolific Straightneck has been the benchmark yellow summer squash in American gardens since Ferry-Morse introduced it in 1938 as a selection out of Summer Crookneck; it earned an All-America Selections award for its productivity. The bush plants are very early and heavy bearing, with smooth, straight, light lemon-yellow fruit that has no curve or bulge at the blossom end. Cut at 6 inches for the most tender, mild flesh; bigger fruit turns coarse and seedy. It handles every yellow-squash job, from steaming and sauteing to stuffing and casseroles. Sow directly after frost in fertile, well-drained soil. In hot regions a late-summer sowing often dodges the worst squash vine borer pressure and can outproduce the spring crop. Wide adaptation;
