Overview
Raven, a Northrup King hybrid from 1985 (NVH 3771), is the zucchini to grow if you want the darkest fruit possible: glossy, cylindrical, 7 to 8 inches, and so deep a green it looks black beside ordinary zucchini. The plant is semi-vining to open and upright with nearly spineless leaf stalks, which makes picking easy and lets air move through the canopy, helping in humid areas where powdery mildew hits bush zucchini hard. The white flesh keeps its quality even when fruit gets large, a forgiving trait if you miss a day. It is also on the early side at 48 to 55 days. Direct sow after frost in fertile, well-drained soil; in hot regions plant early spring and again late summer. Harvest at 6 to 8 inches.
