Overview
Golden Scallop, sold in full as Golden Bush Scallop, is an old American heirloom pattypan grown on a compact, non-vining bush. The fruit is a round, flat, golden-yellow disc with a scalloped rim and light green flesh, mild and slightly nutty when picked small. Harvest at 2 to 3 inches across for the thinnest skin and sweetest flavor, and pick every couple of days so the plant keeps setting fruit; large ones turn tough and seedy. Direct sow after frost once the ground is at least 65 F, choosing a fertile, well-drained spot in full sun. The bush needs less room than trailing squash, though generous spacing helps airflow. A cheerful, productive old-timer for zones 3 to 11.
