Overview

Tromboncino is an Italian heirloom climbing squash that belongs to Cucurbita moschata rather than the C. pepo of ordinary zucchini. Vines are long and vigorous, so give them a strong trellis or fence; grown vertically the fruit hang straighter than they would on the ground. The thin fruit run 8 to 18 inches and end in a bell-shaped swelling at the blossom end, which gives the trombone look. Cut them young for a sweet, nutty summer squash with almost all the seeds in the bulb. Left on the vine, they mature into a hard-skinned winter squash at about 90 days. Because it is a moschata, squash vine borer largely leaves it alone, and it copes with heat and humidity better than most summer types. Sow directly after frost and provide the support at planting time.
