Amanatsu Care: Watering, Feeding and Thinning a Tree Carrying Two Crops

An amanatsu spends spring carrying last year's fruit and this year's flowers at the same time. Everything about watering, feeding and thinning follows from that double load.

The double load is the whole problem

Because the fruit hangs from winter into spring waiting for its acid to fall, an amanatsu reaches the moment of flowering with the previous season's crop still on the branches. For several weeks the tree is finishing one crop and starting the next out of the same reserves. No other fruit tree you are likely to grow at home is asked to do this, and it explains behavior that otherwise looks like a disease: a flush that stalls, flowers that drop, a tree that looks tired in early summer for no visible reason.

The consequence is alternate bearing. A tree allowed to carry everything it sets will exhaust itself, crop enormously one year, and then produce almost nothing the next while it recovers. Once that swing starts it is self-reinforcing, because the light year leaves the tree rested and it oversets again the following spring. Breaking the cycle is the single most useful thing you do for an amanatsu, and it is done with thinning rather than with feeding.

Water: even beats generous

Amanatsu wants steady moisture and dislikes both extremes. A tree that swings from bone dry to soaked drops flowers, drops small fruit, and splits fruit that is already sizing. Because the crop hangs so long, a swing at almost any point in the year lands on fruit at some stage of development, which is why evenness matters more here than on a citrus that ripens and clears in a few weeks.

In warm weather, a tree in the ground wants a deep soak every seven to ten days rather than a daily sprinkle. Wet the top eighteen inches (45 cm) of soil, where nearly all the feeding roots sit, then let the surface dry before soaking again. Check by pushing a finger or a probe four inches (10 cm) down; if it is damp at that depth, wait another day.

Do not stop watering in winter. This is the mistake specific to amanatsu. The tree is still supporting a full crop through cold weather, and a dry winter root zone is also a colder one, because moist soil stores and releases daytime heat far better than dry soil does. Reduce the frequency by all means, but check the soil through winter and water during dry spells.

Mulch is the cheapest way to hold moisture level. Two to three inches (5-8 cm) of coarse organic mulch spread to the canopy edge, and kept four inches (10 cm) clear of the trunk, evens out the swings, moderates root temperature and suppresses the weeds that otherwise compete at the surface.

Feeding: little, often, and stopped early

Split the year's nitrogen into two or three light applications across the first half of the growing season rather than one heavy dose. The first goes on as the spring flush begins to extend, which is also when the tree is under the heaviest double load, and it is the most valuable feed of the year. The second follows once fruit thinning is done, and a third, if you give one, should be light and early.

Stop nitrogen well before the end of summer. Late feeding pushes a soft autumn flush that will not harden before cold weather, and that soft growth is both the most frost-tender tissue on the tree and the tissue leafminer prefers. On a tree that has to hold fruit through winter, you cannot afford a canopy full of tender shoots going into the cold.

Pale leaves with green veins are a micronutrient shortage, not hunger, and they are common on alkaline soils. Iron, zinc and magnesium all show this way. Correct them with a foliar feed applied to the new flush, where the leaves can absorb it directly, rather than by adding nitrogen, which makes an already unbalanced canopy grow faster.

Before feeding at all, check soil moisture. Yellowing on citrus is more often drowned roots than starvation, and feeding a tree whose roots are suffocating only speeds up its decline.

Thinning: the job that breaks alternate bearing

Thin in early summer, once the tree's own natural fruit drop has finished and stopped for about a week. Thinning before that point means you remove fruit the tree was going to shed anyway and then find yourself with too little left. Thinning after it means the tree has already committed its reserves to the extra fruit and the damage to next year's flower buds is done.

On a heavy set, take off half to two-thirds of the fruit. That number shocks people every time. What you get back is larger, better-flavored fruit this year and, far more importantly, a tree that still has the reserves to form flower buds for next spring while it holds this crop through winter. Thinning is the only lever that reliably flattens the alternate bearing swing.

Work through the tree in a fixed order so you do not lose track. Break up every cluster down to one fruit. Remove anything scarred, misshapen or already rubbing on a thorn, because those will only get worse over a long hang. Take out fruit deep in the shaded interior, which ripens latest and worst. Then step back and check spacing: aim for one fruit roughly every six to eight inches (15-20 cm) of fruiting wood, and remove fruit hanging on thin twigs that will not carry the weight for eight months.

  1. Wait for drop to finish Watch the ground under the tree. When no new small fruit has fallen for about a week, natural drop is over and the tree has settled on what it intends to carry. That is your starting point, not the flowering count.
  2. Break every cluster to one Where several fruit sit together at one point, keep the largest and best-shaped and twist off the rest. Clustered fruit stays small, traps moisture between the skins, and rubs itself scarred over a long hang.
  3. Remove the compromised Take off anything with a scar, a split, a misshapen shoulder or a thorn pressed against it. Over eight months on the branch a small blemish becomes a rot entry point, and one rotting fruit spoils its neighbors.
  4. Thin the interior Clear fruit from deep inside the canopy where light does not reach. That fruit ripens last, tastes worst, and is the hardest to inspect for damage through winter.
  5. Check the spacing and the twig Leave roughly one fruit every six to eight inches (15-20 cm), and remove any fruit hanging on wood too thin to carry it. An amanatsu is heavy and it hangs a long time; a twig that bends now will break under wind and rain in midwinter.
  6. Count what you leave Write down the approximate number of fruit remaining after thinning. It is the single most useful figure in the record, because comparing it against next spring's flowering tells you whether your thinning was hard enough.

If the tree is coming out of a bare year and has set enormously, thin harder than feels sensible, not less. A light year followed by an unthinned heavy year locks the swing in place for the rest of the tree's life.

Keep a short record and it pays back in two seasons

Note four things each year: the date natural fruit drop stopped, the date and severity of your thinning, the fruit count you left, and the date of flowering. Because thinning and flowering are cause and effect on this tree, and because they are almost a year apart, no one remembers the connection without writing it down.

Add the coldest night of the winter and what the hanging fruit looked like the next morning. Over two or three years those notes tell you exactly how hard you have to thin in your garden to keep the tree cropping every year, and how much cold your site delivers to fruit that has to survive until spring.
