Site it for the winter, because the fruit is still hanging
Amanatsu is a thick-skinned, sharply sour citrus of the pomelo group, best described in English as a large sour orange. What makes it unlike almost anything else you can plant is its timing: the fruit colors up in winter and then stays on the tree for months more, into and through spring, because the acid only falls with time on the branch. That single habit should drive every decision you make about where to put the tree.
The practical consequence is that a site which is warm enough for the wood is not automatically warm enough for the crop. Hanging fruit is damaged by cold several degrees before the branches are, so a spot that carries the tree through winter unharmed can still hand you a season of frozen, mealy fruit that drops or goes hollow inside. When you look at a candidate spot, imagine the coldest night of the year with ripe fruit hanging in it.
Avoid frost pockets absolutely. Cold air runs downhill and pools at the bottom of a slope, against a solid fence, or in any dip that has no outlet, and those spots can sit several degrees colder than ground twenty feet away. A slight slope with an open bottom end, or a raised position, lets the cold drain past. The best home site is usually against a south-facing wall, where the masonry stores daytime heat and releases it overnight, with the tree far enough out that the canopy is not pressed against the wall.
Wind matters for a second reason here. A whole winter of hanging means a whole winter of branch rub, and amanatsu carries thorns. Fruit that swings against a thorn or a neighboring twig for four months arrives at harvest scarred. A hedge or fence upwind, set back so it filters rather than blocks the wind, is worth as much as another degree of warmth.
Drainage and soil: the failure you cannot correct later
Citrus roots die in standing water, and a tree that spends winter with wet feet while carrying a full crop is under more strain than any other point in its life. The great majority of home amanatsu failures are drainage, not cold, not feeding, and not pests. Test the site before you dig anything else: fill a hole a foot deep with water, let it drain, then fill it again. If the second fill has not gone in six hours, do not plant into that ground.
Where drainage is doubtful, plant on a mound rather than fighting the soil. Build a broad, low mound twelve to eighteen inches (30-45 cm) high and about four feet (1.2 m) across, made from the native soil rather than from imported compost, and plant into the top of it. A mound of pure compost slumps and rots down within two seasons and takes the tree with it. Amanatsu is happiest in a slightly acid to neutral soil, roughly pH 6.0 to 7.0, that is free-draining but holds some organic matter.
Do not dig a deep hole and backfill it with rich material. That creates a sump: water flows in from the surrounding soil, has nowhere to go, and stands around the roots. Dig wide and shallow instead, two to three times the width of the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself, so the tree sits on undisturbed ground and cannot sink.

Getting the tree in the ground
Plant while the tree is not actively pushing new growth and after the risk of a hard freeze has gone. The aim is to have roots settled before the first heat of summer. Everything below is the difference between a tree that establishes in one season and one that limps along for three.
- Check the graft union first Find the swollen kink low on the trunk where the variety was joined to the rootstock. It must sit at least two inches (5 cm) clear of the finished soil surface. A buried graft roots from above the union, and you lose the disease resistance and the size control that the rootstock was there to give.
- Dig wide, not deep Make the hole two to three times the width of the root ball and exactly as deep. Roughen the sides with a fork so roots do not circle inside a glazed pit, but leave the base undisturbed so the tree cannot settle downward.
- Free the roots Tease apart any roots circling the outside of the root ball and cut through the worst of them. A root left circling will girdle the trunk years later, and the tree fails suddenly at the age when it should be cropping best.
- Backfill with what came out Return the native soil, without added compost or fertilizer in the hole. Firm it in stages with water rather than by treading, so no large air pockets are left against the roots.
- Water in and mulch Soak thoroughly, then spread mulch two to three inches (5-8 cm) deep out to the edge of the canopy, kept four inches (10 cm) clear of the trunk. Mulch against the bark holds moisture there and invites collar rot.
- Stake only if it needs it A low, loose stake for the first year is fine on a windy site. Remove it after twelve months. A tree tied rigidly never builds trunk strength, and it will need the strength later when it is carrying a crop through winter gales.
The first two winters decide everything
A young amanatsu is far more tender than an established one, and it has no reserves to recover with. For the first two winters, wrap the trunk from the ground up past the graft union with row cover or trunk wrap before hard weather arrives. If the top is killed, a protected union regrows as the variety you planted rather than as rootstock, and you have lost a year instead of the whole tree.
Take the flowers off in the first year and thin extremely hard in the second. It feels wasteful, but a tree that fruits before it has built a frame ends up permanently small and slow, and amanatsu is especially punishing here because its crop hangs for the best part of a year and never lets the tree rest. Building wood first buys you decades of larger harvests.
Water deeply and regularly through the first two summers, roughly once a week in warm weather, wetting the top eighteen inches (45 cm) of soil rather than sprinkling the surface daily. Shallow watering keeps roots near the surface, exactly where they will be worst affected by both drought and cold.
Do not feed at planting. Fertilizer in the hole burns new roots and pushes soft top growth before the root system can support it. Wait until you see the first new shoots extending, then give a light nitrogen feed spread over the root zone.
Write down what you cannot see later
Record the planting date, the rootstock if the label named one, how deep the graft sits above the soil, and the compass direction the tree faces on its most exposed side. Note the drainage test result too. Two or three years on, when the tree behaves oddly, those five facts explain most of what is happening and none of them can be recovered by looking at the tree.
Also mark where you planted relative to a fixed point such as a corner of the house, and record the coldest night of each winter along with any damage you saw the next morning. Because amanatsu holds fruit right through the cold, that record builds into a picture of exactly how much cold your particular site delivers to hanging fruit, which is the number every later decision depends on.
