Apricot Tree Problems: Dieback, Canker, Silver Leaf and Brown Rot

Most apricot trouble is one of four things: sudden branch dieback, bacterial canker, silver leaf and brown rot. All four are fought by timing and hygiene, not by spraying.

Sudden dieback is the signature apricot problem

The classic apricot failure is a healthy-looking tree that wilts and dies on one branch, seemingly overnight, usually in early summer. The leaves on that limb go dull, then brown, and stay hanging. The rest of the tree carries on as if nothing happened, and the following year another branch goes.

There is rarely a single cause. Waterlogged roots in winter, a cold wet spring, a large pruning wound made in the wrong season and bacterial canker all feed into it, and by the time the branch collapses the damage was done months earlier. This is why the site and the pruning season matter so much for apricots specifically: almost everything you can do about dieback happens long before you see it.

When a branch does die, cut it out promptly in dry warm weather, taking the cut well back into clean healthy wood where the cross-section shows no staining or brown streaking. Burn or bin the material rather than composting it, and disinfect the blade afterwards before touching another tree.

Bacterial canker and silver leaf

These are the two diseases that make winter pruning unacceptable on an apricot. Bacterial canker shows as sunken patches on the bark, often oozing amber gum, with round holes appearing in the leaves above as if they had been shot through. Silver leaf turns the foliage on one branch a dull metallic silver, and a cut through an affected branch shows a dark stain in the center of the wood.

Both enter through wounds, and both are most active in cool wet weather from autumn through early spring. That is the whole logic behind cutting apricots only when they are in full growth, and behind disinfecting tools between trees.

Brown rot, and the fruit you must not leave behind

Brown rot is the disease most likely to take a crop you have already grown successfully. It starts on damaged fruit, spreads to whatever is touching it, and can move through a cluster in three or four days in warm humid weather. The fruit turns brown from a point, then buff-colored pustules appear in rings on the surface, and finally the fruit shrivels into a hard mummy.

  1. Take off every mummy in winter Go over the bare tree and pull off any shriveled fruit still hanging. Each mummy is a store of spores that will infect next year's crop from a range of a few feet. This one job is worth more than any spray.
  2. Clear the ground underneath Rake up fallen fruit and leaves from under the tree and remove them. Do not compost fruit that rotted; a home heap does not get hot enough to kill the spores reliably.
  3. Thin so fruit does not touch Spacing fruit 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) apart at thinning time is a disease measure as well as a size measure. Rot moves fastest between fruit that are in contact.
  4. Remove damaged fruit the day you see it Any apricot split by rain, pecked by a bird or bruised in the wind is the starting point. Take it off and remove it from the garden rather than dropping it under the tree.
  5. Water at the base, not over the fruit From the time the crop begins to color, keep the fruit dry. Overhead watering late in the day leaves skins wet all night, which is exactly the condition brown rot needs.

Wasp and bird damage is a brown rot problem as much as a fruit-loss problem, because it opens the skin. If wasps are persistent, pick slightly earlier at the ripe end of the window rather than leaving the last fruit hanging as bait.

Frost damage looks like disease, and gets blamed on it

A great deal of what gardeners report as apricot disease is frost. Blossom killed at around 28F (minus 2C) turns brown and hangs on the tree looking exactly like an infection. Young shoots caught by a late frost blacken at the tip. Small fruitlets hit after set go brown at the stalk and drop within a week.

The way to tell them apart is the pattern. Frost damage appears all over the tree at once, is worst on the side that faced the open sky or the cold wind, and stops progressing immediately. Disease starts in one place, on one branch, and gets steadily worse over weeks.

This distinction matters because the responses are opposite. Frost damage needs no cutting at all; wait, and the tree pushes new growth from below the damage. Cutting a frost-damaged apricot in a cool damp spring, in the belief you are removing disease, makes the wounds that let real disease in.

The record that saves you a season

Keep a short note every time you see something wrong: what it was, which tree, which branch, and the date. Position matters as much as the symptom, because a problem that recurs on the same limb year after year is structural, while one that moves around the tree is usually seasonal weather.

Note the date of the first sign of each disease. Counted backwards, that date tells you when the preventive work needed to be done in your garden, which is far more useful than any general timing. If brown rot appears at the same point every year, you know exactly which week to be clearing damaged fruit.

Record what you did and whether it worked, too. Three seasons of that record is what turns an apricot from a tree that succeeds or fails mysteriously into one you understand, and it is the only way to tell a genuinely diseased tree from a badly sited one.
