Keep the soil acid or the leaves go yellow
An azalea is built to feed in acid ground. Somewhere between pH 4.5 and 5.5 it takes up iron and manganese easily, and the leaves stay a deep even green. Push the soil above about pH 6.0 and those two nutrients lock into forms the roots cannot pull in, even though the soil is full of them. The plant starves in the middle of plenty.
The symptom is unmistakable once you have seen it. The leaf blade turns pale yellow while the veins stay a sharp dark green, so the leaf looks like a green net laid over a yellow ground. It starts on the youngest leaves at the shoot tips, because iron does not move around inside the plant and the newest growth is served last. That pattern is chlorosis, and it means alkaline soil until proven otherwise.
Test before you treat. A cheap soil kit will tell you in ten minutes whether you have a pH problem or something else, and the two are treated in completely different ways. If the yellowing is even across the whole leaf including the veins, and it is the oldest leaves going first, that is nitrogen shortage or waterlogging, not pH.

Do not raise the pH by accident. Wood ash, mushroom compost, builders rubble and concrete washings all push soil alkaline, and an azalea planted at the foot of a rendered wall or a new concrete path will yellow within two seasons.
Fixing chlorosis, slowly and then permanently
There are two moves and you want both. Chelated iron, watered onto the root zone or sprayed on the leaves, greens the plant up within two to three weeks. It is a rescue, not a cure, because it does nothing to the soil. Every year you will be doing it again.
The permanent fix is to acidify the soil and keep it acid. Elemental sulfur worked into the surface is the slow, safe way, but it needs soil bacteria to convert it, so it takes months and does nothing in cold ground. Applications in the growing season, when the soil is warm, work far better than the same amount put down in winter.
Mulch does quiet work here too. Pine bark, pine needles and composted conifer chippings all break down slightly acid, and a two to three inch (5 to 8 cm) layer refreshed each year holds the pH down while it holds the moisture in. On chalk or limestone soil, no amount of sulfur will win long term, and the honest answer is to grow the plant in a container of acidic potting mix instead.
- Test the soil first Take a sample from four inches (10 cm) down, not from the surface where mulch skews the reading. If it comes back at pH 6.5 or higher, no feeding program will green the plant up until the pH comes down.
- Apply chelated iron for the quick recovery Water it onto the root zone at the strength on the label. Expect the newest leaves to darken within two to three weeks. Older leaves that are already yellow mostly stay yellow, so judge success by the new growth.
- Work sulfur in while the soil is warm Scatter elemental sulfur over the root area and scratch it into the top inch, keeping it off the stems. Repeat the following growing season and retest rather than guessing at the dose.
- Mulch with something acidic Two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) of pine bark or pine needles over the whole root spread, pulled back an inch from the trunk. Top it up annually as it rots down.
- Water with rainwater where you can Hard tap water carries dissolved lime and pushes container compost alkaline within a couple of seasons. A water butt fixes the problem for potted azaleas more reliably than any additive.
Feeding, and why less is more
Azaleas evolved in poor woodland soil and they are not hungry plants. One feed a year is normally enough: an acid-plant or ericaceous fertilizer applied as the flowers fade, which is exactly when the shrub starts building next year's shoots and buds. A second light feed in early summer is worth it only on containers or on sandy soil where everything leaches.
Ordinary garden fertilizer is the wrong tool. Most of it is neutral or alkaline and much of it is nitrogen-heavy, which pushes soft leafy growth at the expense of flower buds and raises the pH at the same time. Lawn feed drifting into a nearby bed is a common and invisible cause of a shrub that grows well and flowers badly.
Stop feeding well before the end of the growing season. Anything applied within about eight weeks of your first expected frost forces soft shoots that will not harden, and those shoots are the ones carrying next year's flower buds.
What to write down this year
Azalea problems unfold across a whole year, so a few dated notes save a lot of guesswork. Record the date the first flower opened and the date the last one faded, because the gap between them tells you when your pruning window falls. Record the date you pruned and roughly how much you took off.
Then record the numbers you cannot remember: the soil pH and the date you tested it, the date you last applied sulfur or iron, and the date you first saw yellowing. When a shrub yellows again two years later, that record tells you instantly whether the acidifying is wearing off on schedule or whether something new has changed, such as a path laid nearby or a change in your watering source.
Note the position of each plant and how many hours of direct sun it actually gets in midsummer, measured rather than guessed. Shade patterns change as neighboring trees grow or come down, and that is a common hidden cause of a shrub that suddenly starts scorching.
