The shape of the year
An azalea does its important work in a compressed period. It flowers in spring, pushes new shoots immediately afterwards, and forms next year's flower buds on those shoots through the summer. By the end of summer the buds are made and the plant is essentially finished for the year, holding what it has built until the following spring.
That sequence sets every deadline. Pruning has to happen between the last flower and the start of bud formation. Feeding is most useful at the same moment, when the shoots that will carry the buds are being built. Cuttings come from the same flush of growth a few weeks later. Get that window right and the rest of the year is maintenance.
The other constant is soil. Acidity drifts upward over time in most gardens, especially where tap water is hard or lime is leaching from nearby masonry, so testing the pH once a year and topping up an acidic mulch is a job that belongs on the annual list rather than being done only when leaves turn yellow.

The three jobs that must not slip
Pruning inside the window comes first. Cut within three to four weeks of the last flower and you lose nothing; cut later and you are removing next spring's display. If the window has passed, do nothing until next year rather than tidying now.
Summer watering comes second. The roots occupy only the top six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) of soil, so a dry fortnight during bud formation reduces the number of buds set, and you will not find out until the following spring. A deep soak once or twice a week in dry weather, plus a maintained mulch, is more valuable in midsummer than at any other time.
Keeping the soil acid comes third. Test once a year at four inches (10 cm) down, and act on the reading before the leaves start yellowing rather than afterwards, because sulfur takes months to work and only works in warm soil. Catching a drift from pH 5.5 to 6.0 is easy; recovering from pH 7.0 in open ground is a long project.
- Test soil pH in early spring Sample at four inches (10 cm) below the surface, past the mulch layer. Anything above pH 6.0 needs acidifying that same growing season while the soil is warm enough for sulfur to convert.
- Deadhead and prune as flowering ends Snap spent trusses off above the emerging shoots, then do all your shaping and thinning within three to four weeks. After that, put the pruners away until the same point next year.
- Feed once, straight after flowering An acid-plant fertilizer over the root zone, watered in. One application is enough on garden soil. Do not feed again within eight weeks of your first expected frost.
- Check leaf undersides from early summer Turn leaves over on the sunniest side of the plant every couple of weeks. Black specks and pale stippling mean lace bug, and early treatment is worth far more than late.
- Water through bud formation Through midsummer, soak deeply once or twice a week in dry weather. This is when next year's flower count is decided, and a shallow sprinkle does not reach the working roots.
- Refresh the mulch in autumn Top the pine bark or pine needles back up to two to three inches (5 to 8 cm), pulled clear of the stem base. It holds moisture, moderates soil temperature and keeps the pH drifting downward.
Winter, and what the buds tell you
Flower buds are plainly visible on the stems through winter, fatter and rounder than the pointed leaf buds beside them. Counting them in the middle of winter tells you what kind of spring you are going to get, and if there are very few, the cause is already in the past: a late prune, a dry midsummer, too much shade, or too much nitrogen.
The winter risk for evergreen kinds is not cold so much as drying. Frozen ground stops the roots drinking while wind keeps pulling water out of the leaves, and the result is brown, crisped foliage in late winter that looks like frost damage but is drought. Shelter from the prevailing wind, a thick mulch, and a deep watering before the ground freezes all reduce it.
Water occasionally through mild dry spells in winter, especially for anything planted within the last year and for anything in a container. A pot can dry out completely in cold windy weather while you assume the plant is dormant and needs nothing.
Count and note the flower buds each winter, plant by plant. Set against your record of when you pruned and how dry the summer was, that count turns into the most useful diagnostic you have, because it links a cause months earlier to a result you can measure before the flowers even open.
The records that make next year easier
Four dates carry almost all the value. The date the first flower opened, the date the last one faded, the date you pruned, and the date you fed. Together they show whether you hit the window, and they let you predict next year's window rather than watching for it.
Add three numbers to those dates. The soil pH and when you measured it, the winter bud count on each plant, and the date you first saw lace bug stippling. Each one is invisible by the time its consequence appears, which is exactly why writing it down beats remembering it.
Note the position of every plant as well, with the hours of direct summer sun it genuinely receives. Azaleas move well, so a plant in the wrong place is a problem you can fix in a single autumn afternoon, but only if you have the evidence to be sure the position is the cause rather than the soil or the pruning.
